GERMANY
An attack in German synagogue spreads
fear in Germany
A heavily armed gunman with a live-
streaming head camera tried to storm
a synagogue in eastern Germany on
Wednesday as congregants observed
the holiest day in Judaism. Foiled by
a locked door, he killed two people
outside and wounded two
others in an anti-Semitic spree that
smacked of far-right terrorism.
TUNISIA
The moderate Islamist Ennahda will be the
largest party in Tunisia's new parliament,
preliminary official results showed on
Wednesday, but with only 52 of 217 seats
it may struggle to build a governing coalition.
ECUADOR
Masked youths battled Ecuadorean security
forces during indigenous-led protests and a
national strike on Wednesday as President
Lenin Moreno stuck by austerity measures
that have triggered the worst unrest in a
decade.
CANADA
Canada condemned Turkey’s assault on
Kurdish militia in northeast Syria on
Wednesday, saying it risked undermining
both the stability of a fragile region and
efforts to contain the Islamic State.
CUBA
Tougher U.S. sanctions against Cuba have led
international banks to avoid transactions
involving the island, while prospective overseas
investors put plans on hold and foreign firms
operating in the country consider restructuring
to lower their risk exposure.
TROPICAL STORM BREWING
Super Typhoon Hagibis strengthening from a
tropical storm to a Category 5 super typhoon
in just a day is among the most explosive
rapid intensifications of any tropical cyclone
on record anywhere on Earth. This latest
western Pacific storm first became a tropical
depression and then tropical storm Saturday.
After that, Hagibis went to town.
