Thousands of Gazans protest on border as Israel
braces for escalated violence
Thousands of Palestinians protested Friday along
the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel,
with some rioters taking part in violent clashes
with Israeli troops. Some 8,500 Palestinians took
part in the border protests, one of the highest
turnouts in recent months.
RIP, Iran?: Could the end of the Regime Be Near?
The problem is not just economic, however. The
Islamic Republic’s old guard is dying of old age,
and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei realizes he
may not be far behind. Unlike in 1989—the last
time Iran had a leadership transition at the very
top—there is no clear successor nor confidence
within the system that transition will be smooth.
More likely is a stalemate or even a military coup
which would subordinate the clerics to the generals.
Islamic Republic or not, that has been the norm
throughout the bulk of modern Iranian history.
Fridays for Future: How a teenager is trying to save
the Amazon
In August 2018, Greta Thurmberg, who was just 15
years old, began outside of Swedish parliament
every day to protest for more action against climate
change and soon became a viral sensation.
Thurmberg later began protesting only on Friday,
and did so until Swedish policies aligned with the
Paris Agreement. She then founded Fridays For
Future to bring together climate change activists
across the globe. Today, Friday, August 23, Fridays
For Future representatives are expected to take
action against the fires that are engulfing the
Amazon and protest in front of Brazilian
embassies and consulates around the world.
There are also demonstrations planned in
Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
Exclusive: As Amazon fires rage, Brazil tells
diplomats to fix image
President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration has
distributed a 12-page circular to its foreign
embassies, outlining data and statistics that
diplomats are meant to cite to defend the
government’s position on the crisis.
As a Jewish teen in the Bible Belt, I face
antisemitism all the time
My entire life, my mother has told me to grow
thicker skin — that I need to block out the nasty
words and comments. If you react, she says, it
only gives them more power. I recognize there is
truth to her words — wisdom, even — but exactly
how thick must my skin get? When I go to school
or when I’m out and about, I often feel like I’m
fighting an uphill battle on my own.
Fed's commitment to act upstaged by Trump's furor
Powell had barely completed a key Friday morning
speech when Trump ratcheted up his war of words
against both the Fed chair he appointed, and with
China, which earlier on Friday had retaliated to U.S.
tariffs with its own import taxes on American crude
oil, agricultural products and small aircraft.
The market's most feared recession signal flashes
again amid fears the Fed won't do enough to prevent
an economic meltdown
The ball is in the Fed's court. The question that the Fed
faces is whether it's appropriate to lower rates to keep
the economic expansion — the longest on record in the
US — running longer.
