Germany takes hot seat as Europe falls into the abyss
We face extreme danger. Unless there is immediate intervention on every front by all the major powers acting in concert, we risk a disintegration of global finance within days. Nobody will be spared, unless they own gold bars.

Half of mammals 'in decline', says extinction 'Red List'
Half the world's mammals are declining in population and more than a third probably face extinction, said an update Monday of the "Red List," the most respected inventory of biodiversity. A comprehensive survey of mammals included in the annual report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which covers more than 44,000 animal and plant species, shows that a quarter of the planet's 5,487 known mammals are clearly at risk of disappearing forever.

EU competition chief wants joint guarantee rules
BRUSSELS, Belgium—The EU's competition chief Neelie Kroes urged European Union nations Monday to coordinate actions to guarantee bank deposits across Europe. Kroes said recent separate moves by Ireland, Germany, NAustria, Greece and Denmark to guarantee bank deposits posed competition concerns and could limit the effect of their efforts to stabilize banks. "My preference would be by far an EU solution, that would really make sense," Kroes told lawmakers at the European Parliament.

Dow plunges 800 points amid global sell-off
EW YORK (AP) - The Dow Jones industrials skidded more than 800 points and fell below 10,000 for the first time in four years, while the credit markets remained under strain. Financial markets took a despairing view of the future Monday, seeing contagion in a credit crisis that threatens to cascade through economies globally despite government efforts to provide relief. Investors around the world have come to the sobering realization that the Bush administration's $700 billion rescue plan won't work quickly to unfreeze the credit markets. Global banks, hobbled by wrong-way bets on mortgage securities, remain starved for cash as credit has dried up.
