  • prayer please!

I am about to leave for a 3 day retreat with a church group. a couple who had paid to go found out at the last minute that they cant go - so they asked me and another lady to take their place.

today I found out that the other lady, who will be rooming with me, has alzheimer's - I dont think too many people are aware she has a problem. I have known her casually for a few months and I didnt know about this til today. she could not remember from one thought to the next.

I am concerned that being in a strange environment with no family around might be difficult for her - she wont take medication, and most of her family is in denial (except the daughter who lives with her.) her daughter said she wakes up in the middle of the night and wants cereal so she has to get up with her. I am just very apprehensive about this.

please pray that this trip will be good for her and not a setback.

    thank you.

Sojourner, I will be praying for you and the lady. Having spent the last 20 years working with the elderly--many with dementia--strange places and surroundings are NOT a good thing. Does anyone who is leading/responsible for this retreat know about her condition? There could be some major liability issues here.

well, I just got back and we had a wonderful time.

the lady is actually not elderly - at least I wouldnt call her elderly! she is 58and I guess to some that may be old, but some of us are old enough to know better!

there were a couple of times when she panicked when I walked out of her sight, because she forgot that I had told her I would be right back. if she couldnt see me, she was terrified she had been left behind, even when others were still with her.

but for the most part, she was a lot of fun to be around - she still has a quick wit - but her short term memory is full of holes.

thank you all for praying for the trip!

                  Wow, 58???
I'm kidding, one day I will make it to 58, unless the rapture happens first.
I got 21 years left before I reach it though.
My neighbor has a bad short term memory, and had to retire early from the phone company (Bell South)
What's bad is that her son lives with her, and he has memory problems too, but that comes from what he drinks and how much (he has no job).
Poor woman can tell me something 2 days in a row and never remember it.
At least she keeps Jr in the house and doesn't let him just wander the neighborhood!
Glad you had a great time.

Well, I'm going to be 59 in Sept. so that isn't old to me. Some ofthe worst dementia I have seen has stricken people when they are pretty young. Glad everything worked out ok.

I am glad it went well, I can remember when 58 was ancient, but now that
I am 41 and can see my 50's coming, 58 does not seem to bad. I often
say that you are only as old as you want to be, I say my spirit is still
in the early 20's, if I could just convince my body to do that I would
                      be fine.

Oh so now it's a witch hunt on Gregstien?
I'm kidding on the age of course.
Many people I work with are in their mid to late 50's.
I guess in construction, that's when you have had enough, and want a softer job.
