Navy destroys Hizbullah's harbor in Beirut
    By YAAKOV KATZ

Israeli Navy ships destroyed the Adi Nasrallsh Harbor in south Beirut on Friday evening.

.....the harbor, named after Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah's son who was killed by the IDF 1997, was the launching site of the Iranian C-802 missile that was fired at the Navy ship Hanit killing four soldiers in mid-July.

The site was also used to train Hizbullah operatives in weapons-smuggling, the army said.

"Zelzal"...it means "Earthquake" in Farsi (Iranian tongue)

Zelzal-2 (meaning "Earthquake-2" in Farsi) is an unguided[1] Iranian 610mm heavy artillery rocket that can carry a 600-kg (1,323-lb) warhead an estimated 210 km (130 miles). The missile is thought to be based on the Soviet FROG-7 missile, [2] with development begun in 1990. [3]

      Shahab-3 / Zelzal-3
The Iranian Shahab-3 [alternatively designated Zelzal (Earthquake)] missile is said to be a derivative of the 1,000-1,300 kilometer range North Korean Nodong-1. The Nodong missile was developed by North Korea with Iranian financial assistance. The Shahab-3 missile can have a 500kg-650kg warhead. The range is believed to be 1550km-1620km (based on performance data of the No-dong B). More specifically it is believed that with a warhead mass of 760kg the missile will fly 1560km and with a warhead mass of 1158kg the missile will fly 1350km. Although not verified this data would seem to indicate that they are working on the Shahab-4 with a 2000km+ range and would be a derivative of the Taepo-dong 1.

Iran was slated to received the first shipment of the missiles late in 1993. However the delivery was halted due to American pressure on North Korea. According to some reports, as of 1995 Iran had not received the missiles. However Israeli press reports in 1996 cited an intelligence reports which claimed at least a dozen No-dong missiles have been delivered to Iran from North Korea. But General Peay, USCINCCENT, claimed during a Spring 1996 interview that attempts by Iran to buy Nodongs from North Korea had failed for financial reasons.

However, active Iranian development of this missile continued. It is believed that Iran may have initially purchased up to 10 of these NoDong missiles from North Korea. According to mid-1997 Israeli reports, at the rate of current development, the project was to be completed and operational within two years -- by the end of 1999. On 15 December 1997 satellite reconnaissance of the Shahid Hemat Industrial Group research facility, just south of Tehran, detected the heat signature of an engine test for this new missile. The test was either the sixth or eighth conducted in 1997, depending on conflicting interpretations of available intelligence. The CIA predicts a first test flight in 1998, while the DIA predicted a first flight test in 1999. The tests of the missile engines, according to US intelligence, used monitoring equipment supplied by NPO Trud.

In May 2002, it was reported that Iran had decided to start production of the Shahab-3 missile, according to Turkish intelligence. Iran reportedly planned to produce at least 150 of the missiles, which are capable of delivering a 1,000kg warhead to 1.300 km range. Israeli officials estimated Iran had so far been able to amass an arsenal of at least 20 Shihab-3s.

On July 20, 2003, on the occasion of an inspection by the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, of the exhibit of air force hardware affiliated to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), the IRGC formally took delivery of the Shahab-3 long-range missile from the defense ministry.

Iran showed off its military might on 22 September 2003, publicly parading its newly deployed Shahab-3 ballistic missiles before a crowd of dignitaries in Tehran, including President Mohammad Khatami, military leaders and members of the media. Six of the sand-colored, medium-range missiles, which experts say are capable of reaching Israel or US bases in the Gulf, were rolled out at the end of a parade marking the anniversary of Iran's war with Iraq that began in 1980.

On 22 July 1998 Iran conducted its first flight test of this ballistic missile, which ended about two minutes into flight. The missile was launched at 06:00 from a firing range about 100 miles southeast of At launch, the missile was detected by two or three American satellites. After launch the missile flew approximately two minutes to the south-east. The rocket exploded or was detonated about 100 seconds into the flight, either because of a mishap or because the Iranians, satisfied with its performance, detonated it by remote control. The flight ended near the time the fuel on the missile would have been exhausted, at which point in an operational flight, the warhead would normally separate from the missile and fly to its target. Due to the missile's mid-air explosion, which was picked up by American satellites, it was initially believed that the test was at least a partial failure. However, following careful examination of the initial technical data, some experts reportedly concluded that the test was in fact successful. The US Government expected that there would be additional tests, and that several more tests would be required before Iran was confident of the abilities of the missile. By the end of 1999 there had been only four test firings of the Nodong missile and its improved Pakistani and Iranian descendants. The first test in North Korea was on 22 May 1993. The second was in Pakistan in April 1998, the third was the Shihab-3 in Iran on 22 July 1998, and another test in Pakistan on 14 April 1999.
Iran successfully tested a Shahab-3 on 15 July 2000. Following the test, the Iranian Defense Ministry told Iranian State television that the Islamic Republic had no intention of using its missiles to attack other countries.
Iran conducted a third test launch on 21 September 2000, but the missile apparently exploded shortly after liftoff. The Shahab-3 test was detected by US space sensors, and announced by an Iranian government spokesman in Tehran. Although Iran claimed the test-firing was a success, US officials said the Shahab-3D exploded shortly after launching. Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani stated that the test of a "Shahab-3D" was conducted in connection with the anniversary of the start of the war with Iraq, which began in 1980 and ended in 1988. The Iranian spokesman said the missile was "solid-fueled" and would be used for launching communications satellites and not warheads. Iranian sources characterized the missile as being "solid fueled" but it is believed that the missile consisted of a liquid propellant NoDong first stage with a smaller solid propellant second stage. A missile of this configuration would almost certainly not be capable of launching a satellite of appreciable mass or capability.

Iran carried out a successful test of the Shahab-3 on 23 May 2002.
Iran conducted an unsuccessful flight test of the Shahab-3 medium-range missile in July 2002. The failed test took place in northern Iran and was at least the fourth [and probably the fifth] flight test of the missile that was said to be ready for deployment before the end of 2002. Recent Shahab-3 tests have had mixed results, with about half the missiles flying successfully and the rest failing.

On 04 July 2002, the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz reported that Iran had successfully tested the Shahab-3 intermediate-range ballistic missile in previous days. The test was described as the most successful of seven or eight launches over the previous five years.

On July 7, 2003, Iran confirmed that it had conducted a final test on the Shahab-3. The missle has a reported range of 1,300 kilometers, bringing Israel within its reach.

On 11 August 2004 Iran conducted a test of the Shahab-3. The missile and warhead were described as, “smaller and designed as a bottle-neck in a throwback to U.S. and Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles of the 1960’s.” The warhead was changed from a conical design to the shape resembling a baby bottle.

On 20 October 2004 Iran conducted a test of the Shahab-3. Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani said the Defense Ministry has upgraded the former version of Shahab 3 guided missiles and test fired it in the military exercise called `defense shield exercise`.
In late July 2005 Iranian Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani said the Shihab-3 contained a range of 1,930 kilometers, a major increase from the previous version of the missile, which had a range of 1,300 kilometers. He said the Shihab-3 developed and tested in 2004 significantly increased the range of the missile. Shamkhani was quoted by Radio Farda as saying that the liquid-fuel Shihab could also be fitted with a nuclear warhead.

In South Lebanon, a Fierce Fight for Every Yard

QALAOUAY, Lebanon, Aug. 4 -- The vineyards burned Friday, a white mist wafting over the terraced hillside along this front line. Behind them were the plumes of darker smoke curling into the air, enveloped by the din of war: the insect-like drone of unmanned Israeli aircraft, the whisper of jets, the crash of artillery shells and missiles and, occasionally, the whistle of Hezbollah's rockets.

The valley was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah guerrillas Friday. As it was Thursday. And as it was the day before, along a rugged ribbon of southern Lebanon where the front has often moved by yards rather than miles, a grinding war of attrition that U.N. officials say may remain unresolved before a truce takes hold.

"They say they've destroyed Hezbollah, but Hezbollah remains where it was," said Hussein Rumeiti, the leader of a nearby village, pointing at the pillars of clouds rising near the town of Taibe. "There's the proof."

He stood with a knot of men, nodding at his words. Success, they said, was measured not in land, but in time.
Yeah, I've been thinking about that. The longer they can keep sending rockets despite heavy fighting the more they are "winning" this war, according to the Muslims throughout the world.

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Six mortar shells that were fired from Lebanon on Saturday cleared the Golan Heights and landed in Syrian territory.

The IDF assessed that the launch, the second that landed in Syria in the past 24 hours, was meant to encourage Damascus to join the fight against Israel.

Israeli commandos renew attack on Tyre

Israeli naval commandos battled with Hezbollah in the southern port city of Tyre early Saturday, while a guerrilla rocket killed a soldier in clashes on the border and Israeli raids left at least eight people dead in multiple strikes across the country.

Later on Saturday, Hezbollah launched a coordinated barrage of rockets into northern Israel, hitting towns from the Mediterranean coast in the west to the town of Kiryat Shemona in the east, police said, adding that there were no immediate reports of any serious injuries
            http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060805/...E0BHNlYwN0bWE-

Also Saturday, troops from an elite naval commando unit of the Israel Defense Forces killed at least seven Hezbollah gunmen, among them senior operatives responsible for launching of rockets into Israel, in a raid against targets in the Tyre region before dawn Saturday.

Eight soldiers were wounded in the operation, two seriously and the rest lightly.

The commandos were transported by helicopter to citrus groves near the northern entrance to Tyre, where they were met by resistance from armed Hezbollah operatives.

An IDF spokesman said the operation was launched against Hezbollah guerrillas believed responsible for firing missiles at Hadera on Friday.

Lebanese sources said that an Israel Air Force helicopter attacked an armored vehicle belonging to the Lebanese army, whose anti-aircraft unit had been used to fire on IAF aircraft, which during the operation had been sending flares into the sky.

A Lebanese soldier was also reported killed in the raid.

The Israel Defense Forces warned all residents in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon on Saturday to evacuate ahead of planned air strikes on Hezbollah targets, the army said.

An army spokesman said leaflets dropped on the coastal city had warned all residents to leave.

"We dropped leaflets warning residents to leave because the army will attack Hezbollah rocket launching sites in Sidon," the spokesman said.

Other army officials confirmed that the whole of Sidon had been told to evacuate [/B]

              Historical and Biblical Significance

Joshua allotted the region of Tyre to the tribe of Asher (Josh 19:29) but the Asherites did not fully drive the Canaanite tribes out of the region (Judg 1:32).

Hiram, the Phoenician king of Tyre, sent cedar lumber and supplied builders to King David for the construction of his palace in Jerusalem (2 Sam 5:11).

Many years later, King Hiram supplied the cedar and cypress wood as well as builders for Solomon’s elaborate temple and palace in Jerusalem (1 Kgs 5:1). The relationship between Hiram and Solomon was mutually beneficial. Solomon received cedar lumber and craftsmen while Hiram gained access to the port of Ezion-geber on the Gulf of Aqaba, the southern-most border of Israel during Solomon’s reign.

The prophets spoke out against Tyre. Isaiah warned that Tyre would be destroyed and forgotten (Isaiah 23). Ezekiel prophesied that the walls and towers of Tyre would be destroyed and that the city would become a place where fishermen would spread their nets (Ezekiel 26:1-28:26).

Tyre continued to be a significant city during the first century A.D. People from Tyre came to Galilee to see Jesus’ miracles (Mark 3:8; Luke 6:17).
On one occasion, Jesus and His disciples passed through the region of Tyre and Sidon. There He healed the daughter of a Syrophoenician woman (Matt 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-31).

In rebuking unbelief in Galilee, Jesus said that even though the people of Tyre and Sidon were pagans, they would have repented if they had seen as many miracles as Chorazin and Bethsaida had seen (Luke 10:13-14).

Acts 12 - Tyre and Sidon

11 When Peter had come to himself, he said, "Now I truly know that the Lord has sent out his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from everything the Jewish people were expecting."

12 Thinking about that, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.

13 When Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a maid named Rhoda came to answer.

14 When she recognized Peter's voice, she didn't open the gate for joy, but ran in, and reported that Peter was standing in front of the gate.

15 They said to her, "You are crazy!" But she insisted that it was so. They said, "It is his angel."

16 But Peter continued knocking. When they had opened, they saw him, and were amazed.

17 But he, beckoning to them with his hand to be silent, declared to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. He said, "Tell these things to James, and to the brothers." Then he departed, and went to another place.

18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter.

19 When Herod had sought for him, and didn't find him, he examined the guards, and commanded that they should be put to death. He went down from Judea to Caesarea, and stayed there.

20 Now Herod was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon. They came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus, the king's personal aide, their friend, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king's country for food.

21 On an appointed day, Herod dressed himself in royal clothing, sat on the throne, and gave a speech to them.

22 The people shouted, "The voice of a god, and not of a man!"

23 Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he didn't give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and died.

24 But the word of God grew and multiplied.

Mother, two daughters killed in rocket strike on Bedouin village

A woman and her two daughters were killed when their home suffered a direct hit in a Katyusha rocket strike on the Bedouin village of Arab al-Aramshe, in the Western Galilee near the northern border, on Saturday.

The fatalities were identified as Fadiya Juma'a, 60, and her daughters Sultana, 31, and Samira, 33.

Hezbollah fired 170 Katyusha rockets across northern Israel on Saturday afternoon, 130 of which landed between 4 P.M. and 5 P.M.

Whenever Hezbollah's rockets manage to kill Arabs (or in this case Bedouins) rather than some hapless Jews their response has always been to declare the victims as "martyrs" for the cause

Re: Israel VS Hizbullah Part VII

Here we go again with the Iran connection. I just hope this Archterrorist is not able to help pull the Hezbullys into shape as a fighting unit.

Tehran Sends Archterrorist Mughniyeh to Rescue Hizballah
                    DEBKAfile’s Exclusive Military Report
                    August 5, 2006, 4:57 PM (GMT+02:00)
                    http://www.debka.com/article.php?aid=1196

DEBKAfile’s military and counter-terror sources maintain that this appointment raises the conflict to a new and dangerous level on several counts.
Mughniyeh, wanted for a quarter of a century by the FBI for the huge bombing attacks he orchestrated on the US embassy in Beirut and American and French troops, as well as a spate of hijackings and murders, is important enough to take orders from no-one ranking lower than Iran’s supreme ruler, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Those orders come through the Revolutionary Guards commander Gen. Rahim Safavi

Informed circles in the West have a high opinion of Mughniyeh’s military, intelligence and tactical skills. His hand was seen in the transformation of al Qaeda’s 2001 defeat in Afghanistan into a launch pad for its anti-US campaign in Iraq and many other ventures in the terror war against America. After the death of Abu Musab al Zarqawi, Mughniyeh is rated the world Islamic terror movement’s most outstanding field commander.
Therefore, while the appointment is a measure of Israel’s belated military success in the Lebanese war, it also brings the conflict ever closer to two dangerous orbits – Tehran and al Qaeda. Mughniyeh is the only undercover agent in the Middle East who enjoys the complete personal trust of Khamenei and Osama bin Laden, on both of whom he is in a position to call for aid.

And to be sure we are covering all the bases in the region, our Egyptian friends are becoming vocal:

                      Al-Qaida Welcomes New Egyptian Group
                      ASSOCIATED PRESS
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader announced in a new videotape aired Saturday that an Egyptian militant group has joined the terror network.
The Egyptian group, Gamaa Islamiya, is apparently a revived version of a militant group that waged a campaign of violence in Egypt during the 1990s but had largely been suppressed by a government crackdown

And then there's this happening in Egypt too:
                      http://interestalert.com/story/sitei...r=World%20News

More than 2000 people marched in downtown Cairo, demanding authorities allow them to fight in Lebanon, police said.
The protest was organized by Egypt's banned, but tolerated, main opposition Muslim Brotherhood and the Lawyers Syndicate, the national attorneys' union.

The leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Mohammed Mahdi Akef told a local weekly edition newspaper Thursday that his group was prepared to send 10,000 'holy warriors' to help Hezbollah if the government permits.

IMHO it gets easier and easier to see how Israel could be attacked and overwhelmed.

                        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imad_Mughniyeh

Imad Fayez Mugniyah (born December 7, 1962) is a senior member of the Lebanese group Hezbollah. He is alternatively described as the head of its security section, a senior intelligence official and as a founder of the organization. He's widely believed to be heading the international branch of the Hezbollah. This discrepancy can be traced to the limited information known about him. He uses the alias of Hajj. Mugniyah is also included in the EU list of wanted terrorists [1].

According to this Lebanese passport application, Imad Mughniyah was born in 1962, in Tayr Dibba, a poor village in southern Lebanon [1]. This is occasionally disputed by CIA South Group records, which state that his proposed place of residency is really a cover-up for an illegal residence in Ayn Al-Dilbah, a ghetto in South Beirut.[citation needed] His father was a vegetable seller and during the civil war, his house was on the green line.

Little is known about his adolescence as he did not attract the attention of analysts until 1976 when he joined Yasir Arafat's Force 17. His role at that time was as a sniper on the green line, targeting Christians across the green line. At some point he spent a year at the American University of Beirut also, his uncle was an Islamic scholar.

Mugniyah has been implicated in many of terrorist attacks in the 1980s and 1990s, primarily American and Israeli targets. These include the April 18, 1983 bombing of the United States embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, which killed 63 people including 17 Americans. He was later blamed for the October 23, 1983 simultaneous truck bombings against the French paratroopers and US Marine barracks (see: Marine Barracks Bombing). The attacks killed 58 French soldiers and 241 Marines. Almost a year later on September 20, 1984, he attacked the US embassy annex building. The United States indicted him for the July 14, 1985 hijacking of TWA Flight 847, which resulted in the death of U.S. Navy diver Robert Stethem. He was also linked to numerous kidnappings of Westerners in Beirut through the 1980s, most notably that of Terry Anderson. Some of these individuals were later killed such as U.S. Army Col William Francis Buckley. The remainder were released at various times until the last one, Terry Anderson was released in 1991.

Relationships to al-Qaeda and other groups
Mugniyah has been accused of being an ally of the terrorist organization al-Qaeda. According to the testimony of Ali Mohamed, he arranged security for a meeting between Mugniyah and al-Qaeda operatives in 1993. This connection has lead some to believe he was also behind the 1996 attack on the Khobar Towers complex, which resulted in the deaths of 19 American service members, 1998 attacks on the U.S. embassies in East Africa and the USS Cole bombing in 2000.

Many foreign policy experts including Michael Ledeen have speculated that Mughniyah has had a strong working relationship with Al Qaeda and Abu Musab Al Zarqawi, especially in recent years with the invasion of Iraq. However, other experts speculate that Zarqawi's intense hatred towards Shia Islam, which Mughniyah belongs to, would have prevented such an alliance. It should not be forgotten, the Sunnis and Shias have, throughout history made alliances with eacother to overcome mutual enemies. If they are not fighting others, THEN they fight eachother.

He has also been linked to Palestinian actions, such as the Karine A incident in 2002, where the Palestinian Authority was accused of importing fifty tons of weapons. He was previously a member of Force 17, an armed branch of the Fatah movement charged with providing security for Yasser Arafat and other prominent PLO officials.

                        Actions of law enforcement
Various law enforcement agencies have attempted to capture Mugniyah. The United States tried to secure his capture in France in 1986, but were thwarted by French refusal to detain him.

The United States tried to detain him several times afterwards, the first being a 1995 attempt to detain him as the plane he was traveling on was supposed to stop in Saudi Arabia. However Saudi officials refused to allow the plane to land and he was not captured. The next year US military personnel planned to seize him off a ship in Doha, Qatar, but the operation was called off.

On October 10, 2001 Mugniyah appeared on the initial list of the FBI's top 22 Most Wanted Terrorists, which was released to the public by President Bush. A reward of $25 million dollars was offered for information leading to his arrest.

The Israeli government has also made several alleged attempts to assassinate Mugniyah. His brother Fuad Mugniyah was killed in 1994 by a Lebanese allegedly working for Israel. [citation needed]

In 1999, the Argentinean government issued an arrest warrant for Mugniyah for his involvement in the 1994 AIMA culture center bombing.

Mugniyah has been formally charged by Argentina with participating in the March 17, 1992 bombings of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires, which killed 29 and the AMIA cultural building in July 1994, killing 86 people. He has been accused of orchestrating the 2000 abductions of three Israeli soldiers in the southern part of Lebanon and abduction of Israeli Colonel Elchanan Tenenbaum, and the more recent attack on israel, killing 8 soldiers and abducting two.

Recent articles by the Counter-terrorisim Blog, and by the New Yorker Magazine, suggest that Imad Mugniyah recently attended a meeting between Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Mugniyah was there representing Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to the same articles, Mugniyah has been informed that he is currently at the top of a US Military and CIA assassination list. For this reason he is said to avoid certain areas of Beirut for fear of being killed by CIA SAD paramilitary operatives, or US Special Operations Hunter/Killer teams.

Re: Israel VS Hizbullah Part VII

This news of Mugniyah and the news out of Egypt sounds like this has just been turned up a knotch on how big this is going to become, they were discussing cancelling their peace agreement with Israel. I wonder what Mubarack is saying, I have not seen any public statedments by him since this started and he was trying to "broker a deal"?

Excellent background articles, Nugget. And I tend to agree with you in that this could definitely be a sign of things being kicked up another notch. Nothing new from Mubarek recently that I have read either.

MUBARAK ASKS BUSH TO GET UNCONDITIONAL CEASEFIRE IN LEBANON

Cairo, 4 August (AKI) - Egypt's president, Hosni Mubarak, has written to United States president George W. Bush to obtain an "immediate and unconditional" ceasefire between Israel and guerrillas from militant Lebanese Shiite group Hamas in a 24-day conflict that has ravaged Lebanon, Egypt's authoritative al-Ahram daily reported on Friday.

Mubarak has indicated to Bush the gravity of the situation in Lebanon and the future consequences that the current events could have on the future of the entire Middle East region, and has asked him to work for an "immediate and unconditional" cessation of hostilities, al-Ahram reported.

Mubarak also warned the US that the conflict could spread to Syria, warning that "such a scenario would close off any prospect of re-establishing peace in the region," al-Ahram said. Egypt's foreign minister, Ahmed Abul Gheit has expressed to his Jordanian and Saudi counterparts Egypt's backing for a Saudi proposal to hold an emergency meeting of Arab League foreign ministers in Beirut. This will examine the crisis and express Arab states' united support for the Lebanese government and people, according to al-Ahram.

The meeting is likely to be held towards the middle of next week, according to unnamed sources quoted by al-Ahram.

Other reports and analysis seem to be indicating that Mubarak fears that if this spreads that he will be overthrown from power and that radical elements in Egypt that he has been brutally suppressing for years will seize control....

...or at least that is his storyline to Bush as to why there has to be an immediate cease fire....(i..e. the loss of Egypt as a supposed friendly "moderate" force in the region)
