Assad is more of a puppet with some strong generals behind the scenes pulling strings ..... as long as they can "save face" and maybe get back a part of the Golan Heights they may well play ball for the time being?

Re: Israel VS Syria Part II

The generals that really carry the weight in Syria would love to see
Israel destroyed but they know they cannot do it, and they know if
this spreads Israel will have no choice but to bomb them back to the
stone age. I agree they are probably looking for a face saving deal.
They may have also relized that Iran is wanting to call the shots and
let Syria take the heat(or bombs).

Syria on alert as Israel strikes near border

JERUSALEM — Israel has struck Hizbullah positions near the border of Syria as forces in Syria were placed on high alert.

On Thursday, Israeli F-15Is struck a suspected Hizbullah training camp in the Bekaa Valley near the Syrian border. The Syrian military, deployed several kilometers away, did not respond.
Israeli officials and intelligence sources said Iran and Syria have accelerated the flow of weapons and combatants into Lebanon. They said Damascus and Teheran have also been bolstering forces to prepare for a war from Syrian territory, Middle East Newsline reported.

"They [Syrians] are operating along the border and we can't ignore this," Israeli Cabinet minister Eli Yishai said on Friday.

Officials said Syria has placed its forces on the highest alert in years and deployed missile batteries along the border with Lebanon. They said Israel, which has ordered the mobilization of three reserve divisions, plans to station Arrow-2 and PAC-2 missile defense systems to protect Tel Aviv from Syrian rockets and missiles

Masnaa is at the border between Beirut and Damascus. It is about as close as you can get.

IDF readies for new ground offensive in s. Lebanon

The IDF wrapped up its operations in the southern Lebanese village of Bint Jbail on Saturday and withdrew most of its troops from the area. At the same time, the army was gearing up for a new ground incursion into Lebanon.

Also Saturday night, the IAF struck a road along the Lebanese border with Syria that the IDF said was being used by Damascus to smuggle weapons to Hizbullah.
At the same time, the IDF said it was investigating reports that a UNIFIL outpost had been hit by missiles. Two UN peacekeepers were wounded Saturday when an Israeli airstrike hit near their border post in southern Lebanon, The Associated Press reported.

If they know the weapons are coming from Damascus, I just don't understand why they let the trucks in and out and THEN strike them???

Israelis edge closer to war with Syria

Israel and Syria appeared to be edging closer to direct military confrontation last night after tit-for-tat attacks around the Lebanese border and the revelation that a new type of long-range missile fired into Israel by Hezbollah was built in Syria.

Tension between the two countries over the war in Lebanon was growing as both Tel Aviv and Damascus readied their forces for the possibility of a direct clash. Israeli intelligence reported that Syrian forces had been put onto their highest state of alert, while Israel has called up 15,000 reservists who many believe will be despatched as reinforcements to the disputed Golan Heights, between the two countries.

On Thursday Syria claimed to have shot down an Israeli spy plane in the same area, flying on the Lebanese side of the border. Israel, which admitted only to a "technical fault", uses unmanned "drones" to locate weapons convoys heading from Syria towards Hezbollah's strongholds within Lebanon, in order for the Israeli air force to strike the convoys before they can reach the front line.

Re: Israel VS Syria Part II

Fox News just showed Israeli troops moving into a new part of
Lebanon, I believe it will put them fairly close to the Syriaian border,
the closer to the border they come the greater the chance of a direct
clash with Syria. I think it is very likely if there is a clash between
Israeli and Syrian forces it could spark Syria to launch skud missiles
                  into Israel.

The war against Hezbollah may escalate as a result fo the Qana/Beirut bombing giving Syria a reason or desire to enter the fray.

Syria blasts US rejection of immediate cease-fire

Syria's foreign minister described as "totally unacceptable" the United States' refusal to support calls for an immediate cease-fire in the Mideast conflict, according to an interview published Sunday.

Syria offers to play peacemaker as top diplomats meet in Israel

Saudi Arabia will put forward proposals for an immediate cease-fire in Lebanon in talks with US President George W. Bush, as Damascus said it would press for a cease-fire and engage in direct talks with Washington. The remarks came as top diplomats from France, Germany and Britain converged on Israel on Sunday ahead of a visit by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice - part of intensifying diplomacy to resolve the crisis.

IDF prepared for attack by Syria

While Israel is not interested in opening a front against Syria, if President Bashar Assad decides to attack Israel, the IDF will respond harshly and with its full might, a high-raking IDF officer in the Northern Command told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday.

"We are continuing with our message that we are not interested in fighting with Syria," the officer said, "But we are fully prepared for a Syrian attack, in the case of which we will strike back extremely hard."

Defense officials told the Post last week that they were receiving indications from the United States that the US would be interested in seeing Israel attack Syria.

Just had a thought .... maybe it's a "duh" ..... I have not been hearing hardly anything about Iraq. Could it be possible that Israel IS going to strike Syria and the US is MAYBE building up in Iraq for a simultaneous attack against Iran?

                            Just wondering out loud here...
