Syrian President Bashir Assad spoke out on Wednesday for the first time since the outbreak of the war in the North and said a cease-fire was necessary in order to stop the Israeli attacks on Lebanon. The president made the statement in a telephone conversation with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
CNN Turk reported that Assad called on Erdogan to put pressure on Israel to stop its offensive in Lebanon. According to the report, Erdogan answered him that Turkey was trying to bring about a cease-fire and would continue to do so.
Now....I don't understand why, when Assad decides to speak up, he appeals to Turkey who has put the world on alert that they may enter Iraq? Anyone understand this one? The only thing I could think of, is you help me here Turkey...and I'll help you in Iraq? Is this why we see Turkey with Gog??

19.07.2006 Russia Might Get Involved in the Middle East Conflict
Pavel Simonov, Sami Rosen
Russian version
Not so long ago, the Russian soldiers and officers had fought alongside the Syrians against the Israelis on the Lebanese soil. More than one year back, Damascus withdrew its army from the neighbouring country. But today again, because of Lebanon, a threat of involving Syria in the conflict with Israel has sprung up. Moscow is expressing its growing concern on this score, as in that case it again would appear to be among the participants of this military confrontation...
Russian-Syrian cooperation
In January 2005, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad paid a visit to Moscow. Then the Declaration on further development of friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries was signed. Separate attention was paid "to development of traditional cooperation in the military and technical sphere".
Within the last year Moscow delivered to Damascus antiaircraft-missile installations of the "Strelets" type suitable for mounting on helicopters, ships and armor. In parallel, the Russian manufacturers have informed on the conclusion of the contract with Syrians about the sale of the "Pantsyr" type newest air defence systems.
The bilateral top-level military cooperation contacts have been proceeding also in the latest time. In September 2005, the chief of the General Staff of Syrian army Ali Habib visited Moscow. His Russian counterpart Yury Baluevsky paid a visit to Damascus in January 2006.
According to Russian sources, during those visits deliveries to Syria of the Su-30 fighters, Yak-130 training warplanes, "Pantsyr-S1" complexes of air defence, and two diesel submarines, as well as the issue of modernization of MiG-29 fighters and a thousand of T-72 tanks were discussed.
Notice they didn't say they would talk to Israel or cease and desist from all murderous acts, arrest those responsible, including themselves, destroy the Hezbollah, etc.

In reality the IDF has no strategic military need to quote "come near the Syrian border" in order to achieve their stated goals of clearing out Hezbollah in south Lebanon
Syria, one of Hezbollah's main backers, said Sunday it will press for a cease-fire to end the fighting between Israel and the Islamic militant group but only in the framework of a broader Middle East peace initiative.
Damascus warned, however, that it will not stand by if the Israelis step up their offensive in Lebanon.
"Syria and Spain are working to achieve a cease-fire, a prisoners' swap and to start a peace process as one package," Syrian Information Minister Mohsen Bilal told the Spanish daily newspaper ABC during an interview in Madrid.
