Hezbollah claims to have kidnapped 2 IDF soldiers in clashes on Lebanon border

By Amos Harel and Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondents

Hezbollah's Al-Manar television station claimed on Wednesday morning that the Lebanese militia had kidnapped two Israel Defense Forces soldiers on the northern border in the midst of massive shelling attacks on Israel's north.

The IDF said it has "serious concern" about fate of the two soldiers.

Two other Israelis were wounded when gunmen in Lebanon began pounding IDF positions along the border starting around 9 A.M.

.....Northern residents reported hearing massive sounds of gunfire and explosions. Residents of the northern were ordered to enter bomb shelters as heavy exchanges of fire were reported in the western sector of the border area.

Israel Defense Forces responded to the attacks from Lebanon with heavy artillery and tank fire. Al-Manar, the Hezbollah TV station, reported that IDF artillery was pounding the fringes of the villages of Aita el-Shaab, Ramieh and Yaroun in the hills east of the coastal border port of Naqoura. Israel Air Force aircraft were also striking Hezbollah positions in Lebanon.

The fighting apparently began when at least two rockets fired from south Lebanon exploded near Shlomi, located about 15 kilometers east of the Mediterranean coast, Reuters reported. Hezbollah guerrillas also attacked IDF positions in the Shaba Farms area to the east, Lebanese security sources said.

Maybe time for those in Damascus to put there duck and cover
drills into practice. This is a serious but expected esclation in the violence.

          Mangled bodies

Palestinians medics and officials accused Israel, meanwhile, of using new weapons in its latest offensive, speculating that they might be chemical or radioactive.

Bassem Naim, the health minister, said the weapons were causing severe wounds which physicians were unable to treat while dead bodies reaching hospitals in Gaza were charred and mutilated.

In Gaza City's Shifa hospital, Dr al-Saqqa supported the claims.

"Even bodies of the injured have been almost completely burnt. They have been deformed in a very ugly way that we have never seen before," he told Aljazeera channel.

Al-Saqaa, who heads the hospital's emergency service, said relatives had been unable to identify the dead victims.

"When we try to X-ray dead bodies, we find no trace of the shrapnel that hit the person killed," he said, adding that the bodies seemed to have been chemically burnt.

"We are sure that Israel is using a new chemical or radioactive weapon in the new operation. More than 25% of the injured are children, aged under 16."

Stories like this getting out are going to inflame many!

Halutz: No More Quiet for Hizbullah
            11:44 Jul 12, '06 / 16 Tammuz 5766

(IsraelNN.com) IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz stated a few minutes ago that "the period of quiet" has ended for Hizbullah terrorists in Lebanon. Military sources said that the Israeli retaliation to the Hizbullah attack and apparent kidnapping of IDF soldiers will be extremely strong.

The massive Kayatusha and mortar shell attacks Wednesday morning injured at least four people, and one of them was reported in serious condition. They were ferried by helicopter to the Rambam Hospital in Haifa and to the hospital in Nahariya.

Re: Hezbollah claims to have kidnapped 2 IDF soldiers in clashes on Lebanon border

Interesting to note....today is Tammuz 16 in Israel. 17 Tammuz is a day that is observed in Israel as a day of fasting. A number of tragedies occurred on this day: the daily sacrafice was suspended by the enemy, prior to the destruction of the Second Temple. During the days of King Manashe, an idol was erected in the Temple on this same day. And in the time of the destruction of the First Temple, the walls of Jerusalem were breached this day.

Edited to add: Next month is the month of Av. The 9th of Av is the date that both Temples were destroyed...by the King of Babylon and the Roman General Titus. Tisha B Av. Many other calamities befell the Jewish people on this day, since this is the day when the spies returned to Moses and the Children of Israel in the desert and delivered an evil report concerning the Land of Israel, discouraging the people and turning them against God.

In the days of the Holy Temple, the two HAPPIEST days of the year were Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) and today, the 15th day of the month of Av. Many intertwined events occurred on this day; they are all connected to their spiritual root. Today, is the day, after entering into the Land of Israel, that the tribes of Israel were permitted to marry each other. It is also the day when the generation of the desert, condemned to die on account of the spies' evil report, stopped dying in that year. It was on that same day that the spirit of prophesy returned to Moses. A tradition based on mystical knowledge also teaches that there is a direct connection between this day, the 15th of Av, and the future rebuilding of the Third Temple.

18th of Av...The "Western Candle" (the flame which faces the Holy of Holies) was extinquished during the time of King Ahaz, and it was established as a day of fasting.

The Defense Ministry confirmed early Wednesday afternoon that two soldiers had been kidnapped by Hizbullah after an attack. IDF ground troops had been sent into Lebanon to search for the two. IAF jets, helicopters and UAVs were also flying above Lebanon searching for the soldiers.

Hizbullah's Al Manar TV broadcast earlier Wednesday that the organization had kidnapped the two soldiers. A senior Hizbullah official said that at least one of the allegedly kidnapped soldiers was still alive.
