Not that there was any doubt, but this article reconfirms who is actually running and controlling events in Gaza for the Pallys....

....they like to scream and cry about the US having no "respect" for their democratically elected Hamas gov't - yet at the same time refuse to acknowledge that it is the unelected Hamas godfather sitting in Damascus that actually calls all the shots

Abbas sends PLO envoys to Hamas leader Meshal in Syria

By Amos Harel, Yuval Azoulay, Avi Issacharoff, Aluf Benn and Mijal Grinberg, Haaretz Correspondents and Agencies

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday dispatched two PLO envoys to Syria, to meet with exiled Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal.

The envoys were reportedly sent to discuss the crisis with Israel in the Gaza Strip.

The Damascus-based Meshal has so far declined to tone down Hamas' militant stance over the crisis that began with the abduction of an Israel Defense Forces soldier, which led to the IDF current ground operation in Gaza to free Corporal Gilad Shalit and halt Qassam rocket fire against Israeli targets.

....... Relations between Abbas and Meshal have soured over the past few months, after the Hamas leader insinuated in a speech that Abbas acts on behalf of Israel and the United States. In the speech, Meshal also indirectly accused the PA chairman of attempting to topple the Hamas government.

Hezbollah Calls Meeting to Discuss Response to Gaza Operation
      20:22 Jul 09, '06 / 13 Tammuz 5766

(IsraelNN.com) The Hezbollah has called for a meeting of various Arab terror groups in Lebanon on Monday to determine a response to Israel’s operation in Gaza to free kidnapped soldier Corp. Gilad Shalit and deter terrorists from firing Kassam rockets into Israel.

The Lebanese terrorist organization, heavily supported by Iran, said the meeting would “discuss the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and continued Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.”

The group said participants would decide how to respond to “Israeli aggression.”

It may just be a prep rally for an attack this week:

Let's see, Ahkmed, do have the nerve gas ready? Check.
Abdul, do you have suicide bombers on standby? Check.
Habib, are you ready for the big explosion? Check.
Ismael, do you have the media in your pocket? Check.
        All systems go.

Damascus asked for something in seven days which means they should launch by Tuesday. Oh, but then again, these terrorists types are so unrealiable?

          Lebanon: 8,000 protest Gaza offensive
          By ASSOCIATED PRESS

Some shouted slogans through loudspeakers, calling for Hamas' military wing, the Izzadin al-Kassam Brigades, to fire rockets on Israel.

Addressing the crowd, Hamdan said the Israeli soldier would not be released until Israel freed Palestinian prisoners. Attacks on Israel would continue until occupation forces were expelled from Palestinian Territories, he said.

"The resistance is our choice and our right as long as our territory is occupied," Hamdan said. "The captors of the Zionist soldier will not give any information about him before our prisoners are released."

Hamdan said Hamas would not accept foreign guarantees that Palestinians would be released in exchange for freeing Shalit.

"The only guarantee is to find our prisoners with us before the Israeli captive is released," he said.

I guess at this point, they have a "draw"? Now the question is, who is going to make the next "major" move?

              EU deeply concerned over Gaza

              Jul 10, 2006

The European Union said on Sunday it was gravely concerned about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and urged Israel to help in allowing aid to be delivered there.

"The presidency of the European Union expresses its grave concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip," said a statement from Finland, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency.

Israel said earlier on Sunday it would continue air and ground assaults in the Gaza Strip indefinitely to keep up pressure on militants to free an abducted soldier and halt cross-border rocket attacks.

The EU said it was very preoccupied by the implications of the Israeli military operation and called for Israel to open the Rafah and Karni border crossings to allow aid to be delivered.

                    Netanyahu: No unilateral withdrawal

Chairman of the opposition MK Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that "There is and understanding on the Right as well as on the Left that we can't continue giving up land unilaterally."

"The moderate Arab countries like Jordan and Egypt are against these plans and Iran supports it. Many in the public are now sobering up from the illusion of the realignment plan, except Mr. Olmert," said Netanyahu. (Ilan Marciano)

Livni: Pullout doesn't mean 'throwing key over the fence'

Criticism of West Bank withdrawal growing within Kadima

By Aluf Benn and Gideon Alon, Haaretz Correspondents and AP

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told the Knesset on Monday that Israel needs to protect its security interests during the convergence, and warned against a hasty unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank.

"If someone thought that convergence is a way of throwing the key over the fence and walking away, while thinking that everything will be alright - that is not my thinking, and the convergence will not be like that, because there are interests that we must take into account, primarily the security of the State of Israel," she said, speaking on behalf of the government to no-confidence motions.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said earlier Monday that the current wave of violence in Gaza would not prevent Israel's planned withdrawal from most of the West Bank or the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

"I am absolutely determined to carry out the separation from the Palestinians, and establish secure borders," Olmert said.

If peace efforts remain stalled, he said, he would carry out the withdrawal unilaterally, just as Israel carried out the unilateral pullout from the Gaza Strip last year. As a first step, Olmert expects to begin uprooting unauthorized outposts in the West Bank in the near future.

The prime minister wants to withdraw from most of the West Bank by 2010 to allow the Palestinians to gain independence and to secure a long-term Jewish majority for Israel.

Agreed. I do not understand Olmert's rationale for saying he is committed to a West Bank pullout, especially while Israel is conducting action in Gaza. I think he is committing political suicide by making a statement like that at this time. Already Netanyahu is picking up on it, and it appears there is growing sentiment within Israel that, given what has happened in Gaza since last year's pullout, a West Bank pullout is not in their best interest right now. However, Olmert said his timetable is to pull out completely by 2010. A lot can happen between now and then.

Meanwhile, Mashaal continues to talk tough from his "safe" haven in Damascus, saying he will not release the Israeli hostage. Look for Israel to do something soon about this guy.

Does anyone think it odd that no one, the US or the UN, is sending special envoys to Israel to help negotiate a settlement?

                              Yes and No....

Yes in the sense that they both have invested a great deal of time, effort and energy in claiming to have moved the peace process along (at least untin Hamas was placed in office)...

No in the sense that both the US and the EU know that any so called "peace efforts" at this juncture would be fruitless, and would only help to fully rip the mask off the Facade they have tryed to create that there really is anything left in so far as a meaningful peace process.

And third IMO the US, while publically urging caution towards Israel, is at the same time secretly hoping that Israel will totally take out the Hamas gov't - hoping against hope that Abbas can then reassert himself into a position of power over the PA....

US hopes to renew Olmert-Abbas talks
                                http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satelli...rticle/Printer

The US is attempting to renew talks between the Israeli and Palestinian leadership despite the crisis in Gaza, according to senior American officials. Deputy National Security Adviser Elliot Abrams and Assistant Secretary of State David Welch left Washington Monday evening and will be holding talks with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The visit was scheduled before the Gaza crisis broke out, but the US administration decided not to cancel the trip and to try to focus on getting Israeli and Fatah leaders to resume dialogue.
