Explosion destroys house in Gaza City, kills seven

By Amos Harel and Avi Issacharoff, Haaretz Correspondents, and Agencies

The Israel Defense Forces expanded its action in the Gaza Strip shortly after midnight Tuesday, when infantry soldiers and tanks entered central Gaza for the first time since Operation Summer Rains began two weeks ago.

Residents said the soldiers were conducting searches in a village east of the town of Dir al-Balah and had moved about 150 meters into the territory.
Meanwhile, a huge explosion destroyed a house of a Hamas activist in Gaza City, killing six people and wounding 15 others, including women and children, as an Israeli warplane flew overhead, residents and hospital officials said.

Minutes later, witnesses said a car in the same neighborhood was targeted in an airstrike, wounding three people, witnesses said.

Residents said the house was hit by an IAF missile, but Palestinian security officials would say only that there was an explosion.

The Israeli military had no comment on either incident.

IAF strikes building in Gaza housing Hamas operatives
      By YAAKOV KATZ

The IDF confirmed on Tuesday night that infantry and armored units had entered the central region of the Gaza Strip.

Shortly after the entry, the IAF struck a building in Gaza City that served as a meeting place for senior Hamas operatives in their planning of attacks against targets in Israel, Army Radio reported.

Meanwhile Tuesday, the IDF shut down the Karni cargo crossing into the Gaza Strip after troops stationed inside felt tremors, believed to be coming from the digging of a tunnel underneath by Palestinian terrorists.

"This is an expected escalation that will force the IDF to increase the scope of the conflict," he argued.

"Today's events demonstrate the failure of the international community, in particular, the US and Europe to address Hizbullah's capabilities and impact on regional stability. The US and the UN are in no position to influence Israel's decision making, to call for Israel's restraint or to act as mediators."

Steinberg added, "Israel's leaders will have to decide how to act next along its borders as well as with Syria. They cannot sit back and allow terrorist organizations to dictate the situation. The primary focus must be military."

"Israel must not partake in a prisoners swap in order to bring home the kidnapped soldiers. Each discussion of this nature will only result in additional kidnappings." According to Steinberg, "Hizbullah's latest attack was initiated in order to show support for the Hamas and the situation in the Gaza Strip."

                  Bomb destroys Palestinian foreign ministry

By IBRAHIM BARZAK, Associated Press Writer
                  8 minutes ago

A bomb dropped by an Israeli warplane destroyed the Palestinian Foreign Ministry building in Gaza City early Thursday.

The bomb collapsed the building and caused widespread destruction in the area. The Palestinian foreign minister is Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar.

The Israeli military confirmed it carried out an airstrike on the Palestinian Foreign Ministry, noting that it is "led by Hamas."

At least three people were wounded in the strike, which took place after 1:30 a.m. The injured were in neighboring buildings, and it was not known if anyone was in the ministry at the time. Ambulances and rescue services were racing to the scene.

Houses and cars in the area were badly damaged by the force of the blast, and the third and fourth floors of the foreign ministry building were destroyed.

ANALYSIS: Israel is at risk of embarking on three-front war

                            By Ze'ev Schiff, Haaretz Correspondent

Two weeks after the start of the IDF's extensive operation in the Gaza Strip, Hezbollah opened a second front on the northern border. The second front, which could expand into Israel, started just as the first did - with the abduction of soldiers from inside Israel and the deaths of others.

Israel faces the danger of a third front if Syria steps in to assist Hezbollah. Strategically, Israel faces an extreme foursome: Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria and Iran. Two extremist Islamic organizations considered terror organizations, and two states Washington names in the Axis of Evil.

Israel has no choice but to hold Lebanon responsible for what happens in its borders and for what comes out of it. Lebanon will likely wail as Israel strikes inside its territory and hits its infrastructure, but the Lebanese government must see itself as responsible for what Hezbollah does out of Lebanon. Particularly since Lebanon essentially rejected UN resolution 1559, which called for disarming the militia
