JERUSALEM – Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas last night was whisked away by a royal Jordanian helicopter that landed in Ramallah at 7:30 p.m. local time to take him on a hastily arranged, last minute visit to Amman to meet with Jordanian Prime Minister Marouf Al-Bakhit.

The trip was quickly set up after Abbas spoke by phone yesterday for about 40 minutes to Jordanian King Abdullah, who is on state business in London.

Abbas aides told the Galil Report the Palestinian leader had a busy schedule yesterday and today, including a planned meeting at 9 p.m. local time last night in Ramallah with a Japanese delegation and with Palestinian intelligence officials earlier today.

They said Abbas would not have ditched local obligations for a Jordan visit unless matters were urgent.

Abbas in Jordan calls for international help to end Israeli offensive

      www.chinaview.cn 2006-07-11 21:25:44

AMMAN, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met here Tuesday with Jordanian King Abdullah II on the current situation in the Gaza Strip, local media reported.

During the talks, Abbas, who paid a surprise visit to Jordan Monday night, called for help from Jordan and the international community to prevent Israel from continuing its military operations against the Palestinian people.

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas)-led Palestinian government and other Palestinian factions have exerted great efforts to crystallize a unified political stance to deal with the international community, Abbas was quoted as saying.

He thanked Abdullah for Jordan's continued efforts to end the Israeli military escalation against the Palestinians and help the Palestinians overcome the economic crisis facing them.

Abdullah, for his part, stressed that Jordan will do its utmost with the international community to guarantee an end to the Israeli military operations and ease the suffering of the Palestinian people.

        This from Ynetnews.com

According to the source, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' surprise visit to Jordan is related to reports on the Palestinian organizations' attempt to launch rockets from the West Bank toward Israel, particularly the recent report on an attempt to fire a Qassam from Tulkarem on Saturday.

Seems as if Abbas is the one getting the warning from Jordan's king..?

Then again 2 or 3 days ago as posted here, the Arab League promised Abbas $50 million in cash - this quick trip by copter to Jordan may be the means for Abbas to bring back his latest stash of cash..?

Abbas makes last-minute trip to Jordan to meet with Abdullah

By Amos Harel, Avi Issacharoff, Gideon Alon, Aluf Benn and Mijal Grinberg, Haaretz Correspondents and Agencies

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas left his headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah on a last-minute visit to Jordan on Monday night, Palestinian officials said.

Officials did not disclose the reason for the trip.

Abbas, who usually travels to Jordan by car, was transported Monday in a helicopter sent by Jordan's King Abdullah II, according to a Palestinian official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the visit.

That very well could be Tom. They did get their 50M today, ironically enough. Though it won't help those that really need it, that would remove their "Propoganda Weapon".

Livni: Pullout doesn't mean 'throwing key over the fence'

Criticism of West Bank pullout growing in PM's Kadima party

By Aluf Benn and Gideon Alon, Haaretz Correspondents and AP

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told the Knesset on Monday that Israel needs to protect its security interests during the convergence, and warned against a hasty unilateral withdrawal from the West Bank.

"If someone thought that convergence is a way of throwing the key over the fence and walking away, while thinking that everything will be alright - that is not my thinking, and the convergence will not be like that, because there are interests that we must take into account, primarily the security of the State of Israel," she said, speaking on behalf of the government to no-confidence motions.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said earlier Monday that the current wave of violence in Gaza would not prevent Israel's planned withdrawal from most of the West Bank or the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

"I am absolutely determined to carry out the separation from the Palestinians, and establish secure borders," Olmert said.

If peace efforts remain stalled, he said, he would carry out the withdrawal unilaterally, just as Israel carried out the unilateral pullout from the Gaza Strip last year. As a first step, Olmert expects to begin uprooting unauthorized outposts in the West Bank in the near future.

The prime minister wants to withdraw from most of the West Bank by 2010 to allow the Palestinians to gain independence and to secure a long-term Jewish majority for Israel.

A palace official said Abdullah also warned of the repercussions of a widening cycle of Israeli-Palestinian violence that would torpedo efforts to resume peace talks.

Israel says the Gaza offensive is aimed at pressuring militants to return a soldier abducted by militants and to stop rocket attacks against southern Israel.

Jordan fears a spillover of violence in the Palestinian territories across its borders and has strongly prodded Israel to engage Abbas as a peace partner.

But Israel's offensive in the Gaza strip, which has killed about 50 Palestinians and drawn international criticism, has also raised passions in Jordan where anti-Israeli feelings are running high.

The prospects for stable Palestinian statehood in the West Bank, which Israel captured from neighboring Jordan in the 1967 Middle East war, are of special concern to King Abdullah who has a Palestinian majority in his own country.

                Report: Abbas threatens to resign
                By JPOST.COM STAFF AND AP

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to resign, dismantle the Authority and leave the Territories, the London-based A Sharq al Awsat reported Wednesday.

Abbas made the statements during a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who requested that he use his authority to help free Cpl. Gilad Shalit. Abbas responded that he no longer had any authority.

Abbas had accused Israel Tuesday of military escalation in the Gaza Strip, saying Israeli forces were targeting civilians and worsening Palestinian hardship.

"The situation is extremely difficult," he told reporters in Amman following talks with Jordanian Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit.

"The Israelis are continuously escalating. They are targeting civilians on the one side and the infrastructure of the Palestinian Authority on the other," said Abbas.

Abbas, who was on an impromptu visit to brief Jordanians on the situation in Gaza, later met with Jordan's King Abdullah II.

In the meeting, Abdullah pledged again to "work tirelessly, and in cooperation with all international sides, to ensure the cessation of [Israeli] military operations and ease the tragic situation faced by Palestinians," according to a statement by the king's office.

He may mean it this time - and for good reasons from his perspective, however Abbas has made this same "threat" time and time again since first taking office...

I have little doubt that just like is mentor Arafat, Abbas has been skimming the coffers and made himself into a multi-millionare.... Abbas owns a home elsewhere in the ME and could head there for good whenever it pleases him to do so...

Recall that he also just picked up $50 million in cash from the Arab League and a good share of that is probably already moved into his personal account...

Abbas, widely known as Abu Mazen, has threatened to resign if his team is not accepted, which could derail efforts to end 30 months of violence with Israel and restart peace talks.

If he resigns, you can be certain he has a good stockpile of cash in
some bank in Europe. He may resign and flee the area if he thinks
he may be in the crosshairs of an IDF missile.
