Terror mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who led al-Qaeda in Iraq as an arch-enemy of American forces, has been killed, the country's prime minister and a top American general said today.
Iraq's most wanted man died in a joint US and Iraqi military raid and air strikes north of Baghdad late yesterday.
His body was identified by fingerprints and facial recognition.
"... Zarqawi has been terminated," declared Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki at a televised news conference flanked by the US commander in Iraq, General George Casey.
"Every time a Zarqawi appears we will kill him," Maliki said.
"We will continue confronting whoever follows his path. It is an open war between us."
Jordanian-born Zarqawi had had a $US25 million ($34 million) bounty of his head after he beheaded hostages and ordered mass attacks and suicide bombings.
As Iraq's most wanted man, he swore loyalty to Osama bin Laden in 1989 and came to symbolise the radical Islamic insurgency against US occupation in which thousands.
Believed to be in his late 30s, Zarqawi had been a mysterious figure for Iraqis, who only know the carnage of his bombers.
US officials in Iraq hailed his death, but warned that Zarqawi's followers still posed a security threat to Iraq.
