  • Trump to speak with Putin, Merkel and Abe in day of calls

Quote from PM Theresa May...(Russian media)

Russia’s London embassy trolls Theresa May over ‘beware Putin’ remarks

Addressing a Republican ‘retreat’ in Philadelphia, May said: “When it comes to Russia, as so often, it is wise to turn to the example of President Reagan who, during negotiations with his opposite number Mikhail Gorbachev, used to abide by the adage ‘trust but verify.’
“With President Putin, my advice is to ‘engage but beware.’
“There is nothing inevitable about conflict between Russia and the West. And nothing unavoidable about retreating to the days of the Cold War. But we should engage with Russia from a position of strength.”

Trump to speak with Putin, Merkel and Abe in day of calls
Before he speaks with Putin, Trump will hold calls with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a key ally in Asia, and Merkel.
But there is some excitement in Russia about a possible detente between Washington and Moscow under the Trump administration.
Later Saturday, he will speak with French President François Hollande and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Pence is not listed as joining any of those calls.

Germany's Merkel, Trump agree on importance of NATO in call

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine on Saturday and agreed on the importance of NATO during their first call since Trump's inauguration, according to joint statement by Merkel's office.
The two leaders had an "extensive phone conversation" in which they also talked about relations with Russia, said Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert.
"They expressed their intention to further deepen the already excellent bilateral relations in the coming years," Seibert said.
Seibert said Trump accepted Merkel's invitation to attend the G-20 meeting in Hamburg, Germany, in July. Trump also said he looked forward to welcoming Merkel in Washington "soon," according to the statement.

Trump and Putin discuss 'partnership' on issues including Ukraine, Kremlin says

The White House account of the call with Putin, which was scheduled for noon ET, was not immediately made available.
In the Kremlin’s account, Trump and Putin discussed “partnership” on a wide range of international issues, including wars in the Middle East, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Iran’s nuclear program, the Korean peninsula and the simmering war in Ukraine, where Russia has supported separatist rebels since 2014.
        https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...putin-hollande

        “partnership” and "the Israeli-Palestinian conflict"
        In the same sentence.
        Really !!!!!!

The two leaders emphasized the importance of “restoring mutually beneficial trade and economic ties between business circles of the two countries, which could additionally stimulate the incremental and sustainable development of the bilateral relationship,” the Kremlin said.

Putin and Trump will also maintain “regular personal contact” and will begin preparations for a face-to-face meeting.

The Kremlin has applauded Trump’s promises to rebuild U.S.-Russian relations, which have been pushed to their worst level since the Cold War by the Ukraine crisis, war in Syria and allegations of Russian meddling in U.S. elections.

Trump's call for deadlier Islamic State push may hit limits

U.S. President Donald Trump's call for a military plan to defeat Islamic State is likely to see the Pentagon revisiting options for a more aggressive use of firepower and American troops.
But U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, doubt the country's military will advocate fundamentally changing a key strategy refined during the Obama administration: relying on local forces to do most of the fighting, and dying, in Syria and Iraq.
"I think it's going to be very successful. That's big stuff," said Trump as he signed an executive order on Saturday requesting the Pentagon, joint chiefs of staff and other agencies to submit a preliminary plan in 30 days for defeating Islamic State, fulfilling one of his campaign trail pledges.

Trump, Putin agree to coordinate on fighting Islamic State

President Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin spoke by phone Saturday and agreed to establish "real coordination" to "crush ISIS and other terrorist groups in Syria," the Kremlin said, referring to the Islamic State.
The White House put out a short statement later on the one-hour phone call, saying it "ranged in topics from mutual cooperation in defeating ISIS to efforts in working together to achieve more peace throughout the world including Syria."
It added that "the positive call was a significant start to improving the relationship between the United States and Russia that is in need of repair."

Trump and Saudis, Emiratis agree to support safe zones in Syria

The White House cast Trump's support for safe zones in Syria as just one of many policy ideas that will "help the many refugees who are displaced" from the war, which has prompted the worst refugee crisis since World War II. The two leaders also agreed to support similar humanitarian corridors in Yemen, where Riyadh has been waging a proxy war with Iran.
In their call, Trump also expressed his view that an international nuclear agreement brokered with Iran in 2015 should be "rigorously enforced"– a departure from his rhetoric during the campaign, in which he promised to shred the deal altogether.

The questioner then said, “But it’s not whether, it’s when and how?”

Spicer said, “I — I — there’s a reason you go through a decision-making process.  And that’s what we’re in the process of starting right now.  So, I just don’t want to get ahead of — it would — if it was already a decision, then we wouldn’t be going through a process.”

But if the decision hasn’t been made and they are in the early stages of the process, why would candidate Trump make a promise, then repeat it again and again?

Why is Russia so happy with Trump?

The Russian ruling elite is hoping it would be able to negotiate a new world order with Trump.
The "new Yalta" would redistribute spheres of responsibility to recognised great powers. The Kremlin, of course, sees Russia as one of them (alongside with the US, China, and perhaps Europe).

An interesting commentary/analysis from Israel's prospective.

Trump-Putin deal on Syria bears on Israel security

It would be a mistake to take it for granted that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s talks with President Donald Trump in Washington early next month will be plain sailing or produce an automatic shower of benefits for the Jewish state. It is understood in Jerusalem that a new order is unfolding close to Israel’s borders, which is not yet fully in the sights of its government, military and intelligence leaders. This process is going forward at dizzying speed in Syria, currently the central Middle East arena, where Presidents Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Tayyip Erdogan have agreed to cooperate.

Trump: ‘There’s certainly a chance of moving embassy’ but it ‘has 2 sides’

In an interview with the Evangelical Christian network CBN News, President Donald Trump appears to backtrack on a campaign promise to move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, saying the issue has “two sides.”

                          the issue has “two sides
                          That says a lot !

I know I'm repeating myself but other then the "partnership" statement this one also bares enough importance to repeat.
