  • Unwalled villages

This morning reading (actually listening to) Leviticus 25 a thought entered my mind when I heard verse 31. First recall that Ezekiel 38:11 Magog and company conspire to take spoil of Israel dwelling safely in the land of unwalled villages, having neither bars nor gates. The emphasis seems pretty clearly to be about them being at peace in the land. However, my thought when I heard Leviticus 25:11 was that the phrase "unwalled villages" also designates a status for land which is redeemable and which returns to the owner in the jubilee year. Lev 25:11 "But the houses of the villages which have no wall round about them shall be counted as the fields of the country: they may be redeemed, and they shall go out in the jubilee". It seemed in my mind to be emphasizing their rightful ownership of the land by virtue of the "unwalled village" status.

This may not be expressed very clearly, but it was pretty exciting to me in that moment.
