China/Spain to build comprehensive strategic partnership

China and Spain agreed that they should further strengthen ties of mutual trust, promote understanding and boost cooperation as international relations face profound changes and new challenges.

Both sides hold that the international community should respond to threats and challenges within the framework of the United Nations and seek political solution to international disputes through negotiations and consultations.

A closer Sino-Spanish relationship should promote multilateralism to make it play an effective role in preserving world peace, security and stability, and ensuring a more just international order. Handling global issues including the fight against terrorism bilaterally and within the framework of the United Nations should also be promoted by the relationship.

The two sides should strengthen cooperation and coordination within the UN framework, boosting the efficiency of UN peacekeeping missions, working for progress in disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, taking joint measures to push for the realization of the Millennium Development Goals, including fighting poverty, hunger and disease, as well as eradicating all forms of discrimination, illiteracy and environmental protection and sustained development.

China and Spain have firmly supported the understanding of peoples of different civilizations and are willing to make joint efforts in that field.

The two countries also agreed to deepen and expand bilateral relations within the framework of the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership and make Sino-Spanish ties a major part of the China-EU relationship.

Spain is willing to push for positive developments towards the European Commission's recognition of China's status as a full market economy.

The two countries should stick to the principle that countries should respect sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries in line with international law and related UN resolutions.

The Spanish government reiterates its adherence to the one-China policy, opposition to Taiwan's unilateral moves against the one-China principle, backing dialogue and exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and a peaceful solution of the Taiwan question.
