Ok, so you've touched down on Mars... You exit your vesicle, carrying your trusty back pack.
You pull out of your back pack the equipment needed to make oxygen, water, food, and, oh yes, don't forget rocket fuel for the return trip to orbit and then home... or so the story goes...
All pure fantasy, of course !
Lets put it another way... Centuries ago, you set sail from England for Australia. You know there is no food or water there, its barren desert... So you have to bring it all with you... You also have to bring all
the equipment with you start a civilization.... A little less fantasy, but maybe now you are beginning to get the picture?
Fast Fwd 250 years...
Space dock, 200 miles above the Earth. The 5000 ton Freighter “Hope” has just been completed, and the scram jet space shuttles are taking off from the runway at Cape Canaveral delivering cargo to the Hope. Every day, the fleet of 30 scram jets makes their deliveries to orbit. Some for the Hope, and others to assemble long range robotic mission vehicles to mine the asteroids and deliver supplies to the other orbiting stations...
The Hope is the latest in a series of cargo vessels built in orbit for use in the Earth Mars endevour.
Like the fleets of Spanish Galleons in a bygone era, they make bi-yearly voyages to the red planet
delivering the mechanized basis for civilization there... After more than 30 years of robotic construction on Mars, the Hope will bring the first colonists to Mars orbiting moons, then transit via the Martian shuttles to the new world...
The first Martian settlements were actually made on Mars moons almost a generation ago as bases to set up the 'Normandy” size invasion / colonization of Mars... From Phobos, they could more easily direct the robotic crews building Mars first city... Now, finally, with the arrival of Hope's colonists, the first colony can be established on this new frontier...
