As Islamic Jihad sparks Gaza-Israel conflict, all eyes are on Hamas | The Times of Israel
Hamas regards its last major confrontation with Israel, in May 2021, as a success. But does it want another round now, sparked by its smaller, Iran-backed ally-rival?
To some extent, [colot=navu]it began in Jenin on Monday night, when the IDF arrested the West Bank leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terror group, Bassem Saadi, 61.[/color] Repeatedly jailed by Israel, Saadi had been establishing “a significant military force for the organization in [the northern West Bank] in general and in Jenin in particular” in recent months, according to the Shin Bet security service.

To a still wider extent, however, it can be traced to Iran, which has reportedly funneled tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars to PIJ in recent years to finance its recruiting and its weaponry in both Gaza and the West Bank.

Explainer: What is driving the current Israel-Gaza violence | The Times of Israel

The killing of Tayseer Jabari, which sparked the conflict, was carried out because he was overseeing preparations for an attack with anti-tank missiles intended to “mow down” Israeli citizens or soldiers near the Gaza border, the Israeli army spokesman said.

US, UK, affirm Israel's right to defend itself from Gaza rockets - The Jerusalem Post (jpost.com)

The United States and the United Kingdom affirmed Israel's right to protect its citizens from Gaza rockets, as the United Nations Security Council prepared to meet Monday to discuss the escalation in cross-border violence between the IDF and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

"In light of the concerning developments" in Gaza the United Arab Emirates along with France, Ireland, Norway and China "called for a closed meeting to be held on Monday 8th of August," the UAE's mission tweeted on Saturday night.

As this started there was a sense this wasn't like all the other times. Yes there is the focus on the threat PIJ presents, but there are a few things that are very different

Israeli strikes on Gaza aimed at Iran | All Israel News

“What is missing here is Iran,” said Gilboa, director of the Center for International Communication and a senior research associate at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University.

He told ALL ISRAEL NEWS that America, which named PIJ a terrorist organization in 1997, knows that Iran is not only behind the most recent threats by PIJ against Israeli civilians, but that PIJ is completely dependent on Iran for money, weapons and training.

“The head of PIJ, general-secretary Ziad Nakhaleh, is in Iran now getting instructions from the ayatollahs,” Gilboa said. “What is missing is a severe condemnation of Iran… Those who ignore the connection between Iran and PIJ do not contribute to stability in the region.”
But Brig. Gen. (ret.) Zvika Haimovich warned that without swift condemnation or an immediate ceasefire, a heavy blow may still be to come for the State of Israel.

“Don’t underestimate PIJ’s capabilities,” he said during a briefing Saturday. “They have – and they know how to launch – rockets and missiles to the Tel Aviv metropolis and to the cities nearby the Gaza Strip. Although they are less than Hamas, it is very important not to forget that.

“I believe they are keeping the strategic weapons from their perspective to the end picture or end statement and keeping the real or the hard capabilities for the difficult hours,” he said.

He added that Iran did not become involved in the region “yesterday,” and that Iranian proxies can be seen throughout the Middle East in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq and, of course, in Gaza.

“One of Iran’s main agendas is to be a superpower in the Middle East and one of the main methods [of doing so] is to support and sponsor all of these proxies … and PIJ is one of the main radical Iranian proxies,” Haimovich said. “Where are the PIJ leaders right now? They are in Iran.”

“The PIJ without Iranian support is irrelevant.”

Why Israel may want a ceasefire, and why it might not be easy to achieve | The Times of Israel

The constantly upgraded Iron Dome missile defense system — how untenable Israel’s reality would have been without it — has intercepted almost all of the hundreds of rockets that were headed for populated areas. Israelis in the firing line — across much of the south and into central Israel — have been reliably following Homefront Command instructions to dash for reinforced rooms and shelters, preventing loss of life.
The death toll in Gaza is rising inexorably, but military officials are plausibly asserting that most of the dead are Islamic Jihad operatives. The death of seven Gazans, four of them children, in Jabaliya late on Saturday — initially reported by Palestinian media as a consequence of an Israeli strike — was quickly and credibly shown by the IDF, including via video footage, to have been the result of a failed Islamic Jihad rocket launch: Rather than soaring toward its intended Israeli civilian targets, it fell short and exploded inside the Strip, to tragic deadly effect.

The longer the conflict continues, however, the greater the potential for the IDF’s achievements to be undermined or reversed.
One or more errant strike on Gaza, with major Palestinian civilian casualties, would weaken the relatively solid diplomatic support Israel is receiving from many of its allies, led by the US, who were prepared ahead of time for Israel’s resort to force and given the reasons for it. A “successful” rocket attack, with major Israeli civilian casualties, would prompt growing demands at home for a deeper operation against Gaza’s terrorists.
Iran, which has been hosting Islamic Jihad’s leader in Tehran, has no interest in stopping the attacks on Israel and is thoroughly indifferent to the consequences for Gaza. Islamic Jihad won’t want to defy its Iranian financiers, but would rather not have Israel kill more of its commanders. Hamas, which is perpetually committed to destroying Israel but also governs the Strip, may determine that further escalation, in a conflict sparked by a rival terror group, is not in its wider interest just now. And yet Hamas may also see no powerful reason for rushing to extricate Israel and Islamic Jihad from battle.
                      Re the last paragraph
                      It is now being reported

Hamas pressing Islamic Jihad to accept truce with Israel - The Jerusalem Post (jpost.com)

So the only one the negotiators can point to is Iran.

I truly hope Israel finishes testing and also implementing their laser defense system.
This has the potential of being SO much faster, more accurate and incredibly cheap to activate each time.
Knocking rockets out at the speed of light, still on Gaza's side or perhaps right on the border.

I've wondered why it's not in play now. The US has these on several warships so if they have perfected it to the point of feeling confident it would be effective - must wonder why Israel has not yet made that move. Iron Dome is great but you only have so many missiles and it is crazy expensive per unit - far more than the Muslims spend on what they're firing.

                          Hi Andy
Good question. It got me thinking and I wondered if it was because they didn't want to risk it. Their intention was only to take out PIJ and keep Hamas out of it. If they used the laser system they would have no control over where or who it fell back on, a greater chance for error as it is new. The same idea as behind the drone assignations that happen now.
Leaders and media were focusing on the kids that got killed and Israel immediately showed the video of the PIJ missile falling back down to the ground and killing the children. The Arabs are concerned I can only imagine their reaction if they used the laser and made an error. Something they kept repeating to the media.
The reason they are now in peace talks, the fear the longer it went the longer a chance of error.

Wow, Amir just reported this on his Telegram channel!

Israel is in the initial trial stages of an aerial laser system that will be installed on airplanes. Such a system would enable perimeter protection of the entire territory of the country by means of one or two planes that would be in the air at any given moment, instead of the many batteries of kinetic launchers that are currently required for this purpose.
I wonder if they did any secret testing of this system during the recent barrage of over 1000 rockets from Gaza. I'd think it'd be easy to hide that from the general public's view. Barrage of rockets go up, Iron Dome sends interceptors, one airplane flying at around 30,000 feet just fires of a laser at one (or more) of the incoming rockets...

Sure would love to see that in action. I've seen a vid of the US version and it's really something. It lit up a flying rocket of some sort and followed it across the sky until it exploded. Pretty amazing.
