  • My Mothers school notebooks, they taught the Hebrew kings in the 1930s

I moved my living room bookcase to give me a bit more room yesterday. I re-found my Mothers high school notebooks from around 1930. She was born in 1915. The notebooks were likely her 1st or 2nd year of high school. Going through her history notes, its really amazing how through the history teaching was. They went through the entire list of empires...Egypt, The Assyria of Sargon,, Phoenicia, Minoan Crete, even the Hebrew kings!
then Greece, Sparta and Athens and their civil war, Then Rome... I was just talking to my cousin Connie in central Maine about how much better educated the previous generations were than our present generation... How many non Christians would even have heard of Assyria, much less Sargon 2nd?
Even most "Christians" for that matter?
the Bible was taught as fact at least in rural schools back then in the early 20th century...
Ever see the "new England Primer" from the 18 & 19th centuries? Even math was taught using Bible verses !!!
How perversely far our generation has come

Those old books are so cool. When my great uncle died, he still had books from his dad (b. 1894, maybe 1895 but probably '94) and his mom (b. 1899); one is a 1924 LIncoln Library, one a Student REference Encyclopedia from 1904(!) I noticed a few long argicles on Biblical figures in the latter 3 volumes, though didn't read them all - I was more drawn to the articles on thigns like Flight (lots on ballooning and explaining why heavier than air flight would be so hard to muster, though they don't say it's impossible, just hint that some new tech would have to come along to make it feasible) and X-rays (cross-reference to Roentgen Rays after the man who discovered themin 1987.)

I may have to dig it out and look at some of the longer articles on Biblical figures.; you've certainly whetted my curiosity about what they wrote about in those days in such reference books.
