  • France owes a debt to French Polynesia over nuclear tests, says Macron

Interesting thing that has been happening and seems to be picking up in the democratic countries, admitting the past and apologizing.

France owes a debt to French Polynesia over nuclear tests, says Macron | Euronews

The study concluded that around 90% of the population of Polynesia was affected by radioactive fallout

But then there are some countries who are or are going the opposite way who are refusing and even blatantly lying about their past sins.

During the Colonial period, it is well known and documented that France was the most brutal nation relative to native populations. Their treatment of the people of Vietnam was abhorrant and was a huge part of what led to the Vietnam war. This was also true in the African nations they colonized. All I can say is that an "apology" doesn't seem quite enough.

Very true. They do seem to be attempting a fresh start. I assume for peace and security within the one world order, by dealing with the past before setting the future.
Meanwhile Russia and China are still pushing for a new Yalta.

      Yalta

city and port on the Black Sea on the southern coast of Crimea population 82,000 ◆U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin—the heads of state of the three main Allied forces in World War II—met near Yalta in February 1945 to plan how the governments of Germany and of the countries in eastern Europe would be established after the war.

France could likely be concerned about French Polynesia because the people there could easily want complete independence... this could be a financial loss for France ...
Follow the money... That is usually the reason for the "sudden" rush to do "something."
Yes France like all European empires, treated their colonies badly... After the Japanese left, The Dutch, French, British tried to reclaim their far East empires by force... however the myth of white European invinceability, superiority had been smashed... Over the next decades, they lost it all...

I suspect it would be very difficult to find a country, but especially an empire, that hasn't pushed something in the past into the category of "denial".
It is highly interesting the western democracy are now admitting their past sins. The authoritarians are still in denial. In fact piling more on.
