In Germany the government collects your tithes

Yes, then the government gives your money to "the church" ... Weather the
money goes to the church you attend isn't clear!!!
The only way out of this is to officially declare you are an atheist and stop attending church

This isn't really a tithe but rather a government mandated tax that has been in place for many many years. When I was in Germany some years ago I obviously wanted to tour some of the beautiful old cathedrals. I got to talking with a few German Christians who told me that very few Germans are members of a church because of the tax. I think it goes way beyond that because the nation has been pretty secular humanist for a very long time.
