  • Three Days in the Grave Question

    I’m asking here for assistance.

I was asked today about Jesus dying on the cross and .. went where for three days.

Wanting to answer accurately, I turned to Scripture thinking “this should be easy.”

Nope. Discovered, much to my surprise, that there were/are thoughts left over in my mind from childhood days .. days of false doctrine.

So, I am really looking forward to this research as a great adventure.

    Some Scripture that I know:

    Luke 23:
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

    1Peter 3:
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

    19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

In all this are words like: sheol, hades, hell, paradise, abyss ..

    Issachar

The church is on Earth to save souls from a lost world, not to save the world from lost souls.

Man learns about history, not from history. To learn from history requires wisdom. Cut off from God, he has none, so history repeats; no new thing under the sun.

I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken - dylan

Psalms 122:8 For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee.

You've come to the right place
Guess you missed the great squabble we had a short while ago!!!
Jewish days begin at Sundown not at midnight...
    So thursday begins 6pm Wednsday!!!
Jesus had to be off the cross Wednsday before 6pm to rise before dawn Sunday!!! John 19;31
He was killed on the same day as the sacrificial lambs on the preperation day before the Holy day which was Thursday... John 13:1 Jesus did not eat the passover meal with his deciples!!! He was arrested Tuesday night which was already Wednsday!!! Tried & crucified Wednsday!!! Thursday was a High Holy Day !!!

Hey Lewis - I think you missed the question.
WHERE did He go for those 3 days, not how can we best understand the 3 days/3 nights.

He went exactly where the scripture said...remember the rich man and the beggar?
These two places are down in the earth...
the same reason down elevaror buttons are red !!!
Science just found those never dying worms btw!!!

oh, and dont forget that during the kingdom people will be able to see people in hell in the abyss...its in scripture!!!
Isa_66:24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

..........also that I think it was the Persian gulf that the fire will last "forever" which is until the new heavens and Earth???
Yes, Isaiah ch 34 vs5 to end!!!
That is it I think!!! Arabia and Iran/// the very ground will burn forever it says !! Knew I had read it!!

That's one place He went, yes, Lewis.
And as pointed out by Issachar apparently He also went to Hades and preached to pre-flood souls.
I am also wondering if there are any other scriptures and talk about where He went during those 3 days in the grave.

One thing I think we need to keep in mind is that there was no restriction on His Spirit when His body died. Unlike those that die in THEIR OWN sins, there was no restricted access to paradise - His Spirit was free to move about as He wished. He (OBVIOUSLY) endured no torment, "no great gulf fixed", etc. So, sure - He went to Paradise but He also accomplished something Peter talks about - a passage that's always been a real puzzler to me but scripture doesn't tell us what happened - just that He went and preached to these souls.

I have some "intuitive" thoughts on this - but no scripture references. I'll read through the thread thoroughly later, to see what everyone has cited.

That said, Iss, I was listening to some old Petra this morning, and they too have an opinion on this very topic. In the song Grave Robber (album "Not of this World", 1983) they say ". . . there is One who has been through both Heaven and hell. . ." So I guess that settles it! (Which, by the way, fits exactly with my 'intuitive' thoughts.)

Suggestion, Lewis. Don't go off trying to listen to Grave Robber. It's too hard rock for you LOL. It'll hurt your ears!
