  • Saudi-led forces, Israel among states rapped by U.N. for killing children

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-u...-idUSKCN1UL2SH

A Saudi Arabia-led military coalition fighting in Yemen killed or injured 729 children during 2018, accounting for nearly half the total child casualties, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a report to the Security Council on Friday that blacklisted the coalition for a third year.
Guterres also reported that the highest number of Palestinian children had been killed or injured last year since 2014, mainly by Israeli forces, though no parties were blacklisted in the annex to the annual Children in Armed Conflict report, seen by Reuters.
The report, which does not subject those listed to action but rather shames parties to conflicts in the hope of pushing them to implement measures to protect children, has long been controversial with diplomats saying Saudi Arabia and Israel both exerted pressure in recent years in a bid to stay off the list.

Ayelet Shaked’s New Right merges with URWP after marathon talks

A pair of religious, right-wing parties on Monday announced they had successfully closed a deal to merge into a single electoral slate, led by former justice minister Ayelet Shaked, ahead of the upcoming September elections.
The announcement was condemned by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party over its failure to include several other far-right parties in the union.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is attempting to push a merger between the far-right Otzma Yehudit party and the quasi-libertarian nationalist Zehut, in a bid to ensure right-wing votes are not lost on parties that will not pass the electoral threshold, the Kan public broadcaster reports.

Netanyahu trying to arrange Putin visit to Jerusalem before elections
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office is trying to arrange a visit to Israel by Russian President Vladimir Putin, seeking to bolster support for his Likud party among immigrants from the former USSR ahead of the September elections, Channel 12 reports.
The Jerusalem municipality has approved the possibility of dedicating a new memorial in the capital for victims of siege of Leningrad during World War II — an event Putin has expressed interest in attending in past meetings with Netanyahu, the TV report says.
Netanyahu is aiming for the event to occur in September, before the Knesset vote.

If at all possible Putin will make an appearance as he and his chief Rabbi are big supporters of Netanyahu and actively supported him in the last election.

Likud adorns HQ with Trump, Putin, Modi

The Likud began a campaign on Sunday portraying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “in another league” from his competition.

As part of the campaign, the party hung massive posters from its 15-story headquarters in Tel Aviv featuring Netanyahu with US President Donald Trump, Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on three sides of the building. A Likud spokeswoman said that there would be no poster on the fourth side “for now.”
