    Re: D.L. Moody

Denise, I am very willing to share my experience here. However, in order to satisfy the scholars on the Board I am going to have to pull out a bunch of books that I haven't seen in years, and hope that I still have. Actually, I believe we have talked about this in the past. I will try to look for the books so I can back up my experience with Scripture. I can't pull it all out of the Bible as readily if you know what I mean.

Just one passage that seems to support the baptism of the Holy Spirit as subsequent to being indwelt by the Holy Spirit upon being saved:

      Act 19:
      1
And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
7 And all the men were about twelve.

I personally have a lot of respect for the website; CARM. Here is an article from there about this matter:

What is baptism in the Holy Spirit?
Baptism of the Holy Spirit1 is a term used to describe a movement of the Spirit upon and/or within a believer usually sometime after the person is saved. There is controversy surrounding this phenomenon as to whether it is legitimate or not. Some people believe that once a person is saved the Holy Spirit is in the person and there is no subsequent "baptism in the Holy Spirit." In other words, they maintain that this Baptism of the Spirit occurs at salvation. Others believe that it is possible for the Christian to experience an additional movement of the Holy Spirit sometime after salvation. Generally speaking, it is the charismatic movement that supports the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

We need to know first that all Christians receive the Spirit upon their conversion and in this sense all Christians have been baptized in the Holy Spirit. This means that they are saved and that they have all they need at that time to be able to live godly and holy lives. 1 Cor. 12:13 says, "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit."

However, there are many Christians who claim to have had this "secondary" experience of the Spirit.2 They say that it has brought great blessing and comfort to them. Furthermore, they say that the results of the experience is a renewed dedication and appreciation for God, a stronger desire to read the Bible, a stronger desire to fellowship with Christians, and a deeper sense of worship of God. Millions of Christians who claim to have had this experience forces us to deal with the issue. Is it real or not? Let's look at the Scripture to find out.
      continued

Quite sadly, MANY who believed in and experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit, went off into some horrendous "doctrine" and very ungodly "manifestations" thereby, causing many to associate that "stuff" with the topic here.

      Issachar
The church is on Earth to save souls from a lost world, not to save the world from lost souls.

Man learns about history, not from history. To learn from history requires wisdom. Cut off from God, he has none, so history repeats; no new thing under the sun.

I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken - dylan

Psalms 122:8 For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee.

        Re: D.L. Moody

You know, after reading Issachars post, and being in the midst of personal upheaval, I am just going to go with the Scripture he posted. My bottom line is this. I was born again at 14. I only began to hear Grace preached at 31. I went to a women's retreat in 1984 and was blown away by the love and the community and the sense of the presence of the Holy Spirit. I left hungry for more. They gave us, among other things, a reading list. On that list was the book 9:00 in the Morning by Fr. Dennis Bennett. I had grown up Baptist and married an Episcopalian. I only knew about grace in the Episcopal church. Needless to say I was hungry for more. I read 9 O'Clock in the Morning, written by a seminary trained traditional episcopalian who had been "Baptized" in the Holy Spirit. I wanted all that God had for me. I read more and more and more. (I am an intellectual sort of being and try to get it all figured out) I talked to people who had had this experience. Finally 6 months later, knowing I was starving for more of the Presence of God in my life, I sat in my family room and asked God to Baptize me in the Holy Spirit. And he did. And I received a prayer language, much to my chagrine ( only low class uneducated people speak in tongues I thought.) My life was transformed. The Word flew off the pages at me. God began to use me in ways I would never have imagined. My level of intimacy with God grew, and continues to grow and sometimes it just blows me totally away. He is All in All. He is More than I can ever Imagine or Hope For. And that is my personal story. I still continue to use my prayer language and thank God for it, as Paul did. There are times when there are no humanly possible words to express the depth of a need or concern. And I believe, truly, that what was done in the Upper Room on Pentecost Sunday is available to every born again Christian today. All you have to do is ask. God is faithful. Andy and Mods, if this isn't what you wanted to hear in my personal response, feel free to remove the post. I will be disappointed but will live through it. Not by might, not by power but by My Spirit, says the Lord God of Hosts!
