U.S. State Department Calls for a New Government in Venezuela

The statement was the latest in a series of Trump administration attacks on Maduro, whose inauguration to a new term as president on Thursday has been widely denounced as illegitimate.
“The people of Venezuela deserve to live in freedom in a democratic society governed by the rule of law,” State Department spokesman Robert Palladino said. “It is time to begin the orderly transition to a new government. We support the National Assembly’s call for all Venezuelans to work together, peacefully, to restore constitutional government and build a better future.”

Nicaragua accuses U.S. of financing international coup as OAS considers punishment

The Nicaraguan foreign minister accused the United States on Friday of financing an attempted coup against the Ortega government as the United States, Latin American allies and Canada took the “first step” to possibly suspend the Central American nation from the America’s hemispheric body.

Ours was always meant to be a hemisphere of freedom, and that vision is why the Organization of American States exists.
One week ago today, this body celebrated the 70th anniversary of its founding, when 21 nations from across the Western Hemisphere declared to the world, and I quote, “that the historic mission of America is to offer a land of liberty.” And that vision endures to this very day.
Today, this institution essentially represents our entire Western Hemisphere. And the United States is proud — proud to stand with the OAS. And we’re especially grateful for the principled leadership of Secretary General Almagro. Thank you for your outstanding words today.

Canada and the US have now recognized him as president. Europe apparently to follow.

The OAS Sides with the People of Venezuela
On Thursday, January 10, in Washington, DC, the OAS Permanent Council finally had the votes to approve a Resolution that “does not recognize the legitimacy of Nicolás Maduro’s new term as of January 10, 2019”, and among other things, “calls for new presidential elections” to be held in Venezuela with the participation of international observers as guarantors of its fairness and transparency.

Venezuela crisis looms over pope's Central America visit

              January 24. 2019
Pope Francis has arrived in Panama amid a political crisis in nearby Venezuela, a migration standoff over the proposed U.S.-Mexico border wall and tens of thousands of wildly excited young Central Americans welcoming him.

As Francis opens his first full day Thursday, all eyes will be on whether he refers to the upheaval in Venezuela when he addresses Panama's president and later the region's bishops.

Pompeo taps hawkish GOP veteran to lead US efforts in Venezuela

Top US diplomat says Elliott Abrams, a Reagan-era official convicted in the Iran-Contra scandal, will assist in ‘restoring democracy’ to Latin American country
Top US diplomat Mike Pompeo on Friday tapped Elliott Abrams, a central figure in Ronald Reagan’s controversial anti-communist campaigns in Central America, as a new envoy to “restore democracy” in Venezuela.
Pompeo announced the appointment of Abrams two days after Washington declared head of state Nicolas Maduro to be illegitimate and recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as the interim president of crisis-plagued Venezuela.

                  Please note
It was only after the OAS was able to get the vote, at it's head office in Washington, that Venezuela was violating the OAS constitution did others begin to act.
The OAS has been trying for years but it was only successful on Jan 10.
Nothing new. We have seen the same pattern over and over.

Michael R. Pompeo At the Organization of American States

All member states who have committed to uphold the Inter-American Democratic Charter must now recognize the interim president.
Each of us – each of us – must live up to our calling to promote and defend democracy, as expressed in the tenets of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, to which everyone in this chamber is a signatory.

And we call on all our partners and responsible OAS member states to show leadership and pledge support for Venezuela’s democratic transition and for interim President Guaido’s pivotal role in that.

                          Hi Andy

I don't know if this will make you feel any better but this isn't unusual. I've seen more or less the same level talk within the "unions" before. The process has worked in Africa and South America one other time.
In Venezuela they are part way through the process. In Africa they actually had to assemble troops to encircle the country and start moving in before the dictator flew the white flag and the real negotiations started.
In South America they didn't have to go as far as to assemble troops the last time.

Interesting thing this time???? The most recent high profile hire
In his previous government roles, Abrams was known as a hawk on Latin America and played a role in the Iran-Contra affair. He was convicted of withholding information from Congress during the Iran-Contra investigation but later pardoned.

As you can tell once a country signs on the dotted line to obey the union constitution they don't put up with any messing around. They will deal with you.

This is where the rubber hits the road with Putin...the democracy part and the lack of power he sees coming for his beliefs.
