  • US Ambassador Friedman briefs Trump on Temple Mount crisis

I don't know about anyone else but the ony thing I heard today was Pres. Trump's reference to North Korea and not the reference to the middle east....

Convening his cabinet before meeting with Friedman, Trump did vaguely reference a situation in the Middle East that has been preoccupying his time.
We have some interesting situations that we ll handle: North Korea, Middle East, lots of problems that we inherited from previous administrations, the president said. But we ll take care of them. We ll take care of them very well.

As record number of Jews visit Temple Mount, Jordan warns of more crises
Speaking at an emergency Executive Committee meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Ayman Safadi noted the large number of Jewish visitors and said while the crisis over the Temple Mount had ended, more unrest could be in the offing.
The number of extremists who stormed Al-Aqsa today stands at a record number, greater than any other since the beginning of the Israeli occupation in 1967, Safadi told the gathered foreign ministers from 57 countries in Istanbul, using the Muslim name for the compound which also houses the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
However, many more dangerous crises will erupt as a result of continued Israeli violations if Israel does not uproot the sources of the tension, if the occupation doesn t end, if East Jerusalem is not independent and not the capital of the sovereign Palestinian State along the 1967 lines, Safadi warned.
We must prepare for the next round

Netanyahu will try again to impose his status quo and we must prepare for the next round, which could happen very soon and be very tough, Malki said.

      reminders

DEBKAfile military sources report that several hundred Russian combat troops took up position Monday at Quneitra opposite Israel s Golan border. Contrary to Russian media reports, they are not military police officers bearing the light weapons of peacekeepers, but fully kitted out and armed Russian special operations troops, the first to be deployed at any Israeli border.

And more from the news today...

The Israeli security cabinet held its first meeting on Sunday discussing the cease-fire reached by the U.S. and Russia in southern Syria, an agreement that has raised concerns in Jerusalem. The meeting lasted four hours.
During the meeting, the ministers were briefed that the American-Russian announcement of the cease-fire in southern Syria was only an initial step, and that the two countries are now negotiating, alongside Jordan, all components of organizing the de-escalation zones. The central issue that remains unresolved is the question of who would guarantee those arrangements in the zones, monitor the cease-fire and guarantee no entry of Iranian, Hezbollah or Shi'ite militia forces.
Once again, no Israeli input was allowed.

The ministers were also presented with the reasons why Israel opposed the draft agreement as it stands, particularly the monitoring of de-escalation zones on the border.
The reality here is changing quickly, ISIS is in a great retreat, and Iran is trying to fill the vacuum, Netanyahu said. Iran, together with Hezbollah, is creating a northern arc, assisted by precision weapons

In the weeks leading up to the agreement Israel held talks with senior U.S. administration officials and presented a number of demands and reservations. Israel central demand was that the de-escalation zones serve to keep Iran, Hezbollah and Shi'ite militias away from the Israeli and Jordanian border, and not allow an Iranian foothold in Syria. Israel also made clear to the U.S. it opposes enforcement of the cease-fire by Russian military forces in the de-escalation zones near its border.
But Israel ended up with exactly what they demanded not happen.....

U.S. Is Working With Russia to Prevent a New War In Syria, Tillerson Says

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Tuesday the White House is looking to prevent another uptick in violence between the Syrian government and rebel groups once the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) is defeated, and it may need Russia's help to do so.
The U.S. has cut assistance to rebel groups fighting Assad but continues to advocate the Syrian leader's political removal. The task has become increasingly difficult as pro-government forces re-establish control over most of the country, paving the way for increased Russian military presence in the west and the proliferation of Iran-backed, mostly Shiite Muslim militias in the southeast. Tillerson said Tuesday that Iran must leave and go home, according to The Washington Post.

Trump signs what he calls seriously flawed bill imposing new sanctions on Russia

By limiting the Executive flexibility, this bill makes it harder for the United States to strike good deals for the American people, and will drive China, Russia, and North Korea much closer together, Trump said in a statement on Wednesday morning.

            Russian response

Some US officials were saying that this is a bill that might encourage Russia to cooperate with the United States; to me that's a strange sort of encouragement, he told reporters. Those who invented this bill, if they were thinking they might change our policy, they were wrong.

They should have known better, that we do not bend, we do not break, he said. It is harming our relations inevitably but we will be working in the conditions that exist in the hope it will turn one day.
