  • Russia Showcases Global Ambitions With Military Parades, One in Syria

Russia global military ambition was on display Sunday when the country celebrated Navy Day with large military parades not only in St. Petersburg, but also on the banks of Syria.

The parades of ships, submarines and aircraft were held at Russian naval bases in Sevastopol, which was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014, and at Tartus in Syria, where Russia is expanding its military presence.

Fascinating article on the observations of a BBC reporter in Moscow

Could Putin prove to be Trump's fatal attraction?

You can tell a lot from Russian fridge magnets. This week s selection includes several different Vladimir Putin in military camouflage magnets, complete with patriotic slogans, like: Together we are a force to be reckoned with! and We will always look out for our guys!
    Kremlin policy in a nutshell.
One fridge magnet in particular caught my eye. It looks just like a $100 bill but, in place of the American founding father Benjamin Franklin, there is a portrait of Vladimir Putin.
The two Russian diplomatic compounds, closed by President Obama last December, remain shut. And the idea of a "Grand Deal" with America, much hoped for here at the start of the Trump presidency, has disappeared from the pages of the Russian dailies.
Moscow is not blaming Donald Trump directly for this. One Russian newspaper, Nezavisimaya Gazeta, explained recently that, in the current atmosphere, Trump doesn t have the slightest possibility to improve Russian-US relations, since any step, any glance even in the direction of Russia is met with suspicion back home and even viewed as treason.

US attitudes to Russia unlikely to change soon, says Putin
The president explained why response measures have been taken now. Because the American side once again made an absolutely ungrounded, which is important, step to deteriorate the Russian-US relations, imposing illegal restrictions and trying to press other countries, including its allies, which are interested in the development and maintaining of relations with Russia,he said, obviously referring to the US bill toughening the anti-Russian sanctions.

We have been waiting for quite a long time for any positive changes in the United States attitudes to Russia, we have hoped that the situation will change somehow. But, to all appearances, even if it ever changes, it will not be soon, he said in an interview with VGTRK host Vladimir Solovyov. I thought we must demonstrate that we are not going to leave anything unanswered either.
According to Putin, such cooperation is yielding good results. Judging by what has been done recently (let us wait and see how the situation develops further), the establishment of the de-escalation zone in Syria is a concrete step, a concrete result of joint efforts, he underscored. Not only in the interests of Syria and Russia but also in the interests of Jordan and Israel, and, hence, in the interests of the United States as this is region of US interests. So, we are working and achieving results even now, in this rather difficult situation.

The Russian president cited other areas of possible cooperation. Well, we have good plans for cooperation in outer space. For instance, both our and American researchers are interested in possible joint efforts to explore Venus, he noted.

Other major areas of cooperation, in his words, are problems of cyber security. I have already told that, we have repeatedly invited the American side to arrange cooperation to secure out interests, both Russia and the United States and global, and to establish control over such negative activities as cyber crime, he said. Instead of making concrete steps to begin constructive cooperation, we only hear ungrounded accusations of meddling in the United States domestic affairs.

Moreover, the two countries can establish economic cooperation, including such sectors as energy, aviation, space exploration. We have done much in the sphere of aviation, in the sphere of space exploration and we have good perspectives, let alone US spacecraft that are launched by our engines, let alone the international space program, he added.

Trump, Putin, Xi: Talking fades to shows of force

For six months, Putin waited to see whether Trump was able to beat down the media-boosted war waged against his presidency be political and intelligence enemies at home, much of it focused on the Russian dimension. His patience with the US president and his troubles at home is clearly at an end.
On Sunday, July 30, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov called the new sanctions completely weird and unacceptable, adding If the US side decides to move further towards further deterioration we will answer, we will respond in kind. We will mirror this. We will retaliate, he stressed.
Further west, US Vice President Mike Pence toured East European capitals. Speaking in Tallinn, Estonia, he assured our Baltic allies as well as Georgia and Montenegro, his next destinations: We are with you and will stand with you on behalf of freedom. He said that the president would soon sign the latest round of sanctions voted on by Congress, since Russia s destabilizing activities and support for rogue regimes and its activities in Ukraine are unacceptable.
