Curiously, Jane said she noticed at the malls he is building you see more and more women wearing head scarfs. They tend to have a more religious business atmosphere.

Re: Turkish police crack down on Istanbul park protest

Reaction from the EU and the US at a time Turkey thought it was making progress entering the EU

As clashes between demonstrators and police sparked by the destruction of a municipal park in Istanbul continued into their fourth day on Monday, the European Union blasted the Turkish security forces for their “disproportionate” use of force, while the United States called on them to “exercise restraint.”

But it is the increasingly authoritarian character of the Erdogan regime, now serving his third term in office, which seems to be at the heart of the protest movement.

Turkish union to strike from Tuesday over unrest

Turkey's Public Workers Unions Confederation (KESK) said on Monday it would hold a "warning strike" on June 4-5 to protest at a crackdown on anti-government protests over the last four days.

"The state terror implemented against mass protests across the country ... has shown once again the enmity to democracy of the AKP government," said a statement from the leftist confederation KESK, which has some 240,000 members in 11 unions.

Turkish company says provides Syria with diesel

The Turkish foreign ministry declined to comment on the specific matter but reiterated its position on Assad regime.

"Turkey's position on Syrian regime's brutality against its own people has been made obvious and Turkey would not be able to ignore any support or aid efforts to this situation," a foreign ministry official said.

He is starting to say the same things we heard from Assad, Mubarak, Gaddafi and on and on .

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan accused anti-government protesters on Monday of walking "arm-in-arm with terrorism", remarks that could further inflame public anger after three days of some of the most violent riots in decades.
