Well, it's not just the IRS. To quote one source:

...Even more valuable, though, is the ability to track and gain insight into a suspect's mentality, simply by monitoring their posts. Because there is no reasonable expectation of privacy when you willingly post online, all of these actives are subject to scrutiny. This means that cops can use social media sites to gather valuable intelligence on suspected criminals.

"Data Mining" has evolved into "Predictive Analytics"; and it's a career area that educational institutions cannot keep up with.

I still say that if I need a password to log onto something, then no one unauthorized has a right to it. Now if someone commits a crime, then yes, but it should be with a warrant just like entering a residence. Just because it is easy for an entity to track people on the net, doesn't mean it's ok to. I don't want an officer of some sort walking up to my house after the mailman delivers my mail, and rifling through to see who I receive mail from. Why some think it's ok to do that just because it's in an electronic form, is beyond me. Those are my online accounts. No one .. from google to the sheriff to the federal government has a right to any of my info.

That being said .. I've known for a long time that the government has no regard for privacy and will take any info they can get, anywhere they can get it .. any way they have to. But it's not right and they aren't about to stop. Like I always say .. if anyone spy's on my for even a short time, they'll fall asleep while on duty.

If thirty years ago, we saw some uniformed officials going up and down our streets, writing down info off of our mail, we'd be like ... well, they'd be chased out. But because they can data mine, they do. These wrong things must be in these last days.

We often hear that "it's just for marketing, etc." I don't care what it's for. That is irrelevant. In a free society (remember those?), privacy is a very, very high priority.

The internet could have been way cool instead of just cool, if people would leave each other alone. But alas ..

Issachar, thinks it's funny that the IRS would have to go to facebook for info when they can have all the info on us that they want, already.

I have to agree with you. But we would probably both get adds for Lazy Boys, Sleeper Sofas, etc.... even though I don't consider myself lazy. Maybe I would also be targeted for the the latest lawnmower, week wacker, fertilizer spredder, or other stuff like that.

And I agree, logging on with a password should be protection enough. That said, we have to log on to post here, but the post itself, is publically viewable.

I'm not sure about Facebook. I don't use it; well, that's not really true. I do have a shell account so I can view other stuff. In fact, as I understand it, anyone with an account can view anything that is marked as "public", or whatever the term is they use. Lots of good stuff about this over at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

I don't really care much about the marketing use (still don't think they have the right though), but government building unending databases on all of us is a very clear no-no .. abuse of technology. Again, just because they can, doesn't mean it's ok. But they will do what they think they need to do (for the good of all of us; of course) .. rights need not apply.

Issachar .. thinks it doesn't matter at this point.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has claimed that agents do not need warrants to read people's emails, text messages and other private electronic communications, according to internal agency documents.
