  • Pope to resign

Just heard on the morning news that the Pope will resign February 28th! I'll dig out some further confirmation. Wow!
    http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2...signation.html

The Vatican Radio website has the full text of the pope's statement today. Here it is in full:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013...-live-reaction

    Dear Brothers,

I have convoked you to this Consistory, not only for the three canonisations, but also to communicate to you a decision of great importance for the life of the Church. After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.

I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me.

For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is.

Dear Brothers, I thank you most sincerely for all the love and work with which you have supported me in my ministry and I ask pardon for all my defects. And now, let us entrust the Holy Church to the care of Our Supreme Pastor, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and implore his holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff. With regard to myself, I wish to also devotedly serve the Holy Church of God in the future through a life dedicated to prayer.

From the Vatican, 10 February 2013

    BENEDICTUS PP XVI
make way for Peter the Roman, the last pope?

If the next pope goes by the name of Peter, I'm gonna get a little freaked out.

I never expected he would actually resign..that hasn't happened since 1415..I think that's what the article said. And now they can elect another pope more quickly..by mid March. Amazing turn of events.

Sad that Benedict has "to implore his (Jesus) holy Mother Mary, so that she may assist the Cardinal Fathers with her maternal solicitude, in electing a new Supreme Pontiff."
HSB: I think Mary is in the grave waiting for the resurrection, just like all the other saints who have died. She is not in any position to be "assisting..with maternal solicitude". I wonder who will be doing the "assisting".

Denise: we both noticed the same thing!!!

The church is on Earth to save souls from a lost world, not to save the world from lost souls.

Man learns about history, not from history. To learn from history requires wisdom. Cut off from God, he has none, so history repeats; no new thing under the sun.

I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken - dylan

Psalms 122:8 For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee.

I was shocked when I heard this first thing this a.m. Literally had every hair on my body stand up. Things should get even more interesting. By the way, I think it does say something about the man that he had the good sense to resign and not wind up the way poor, frail, John Paul did.

Issachar: a good guess! When I was in Mexico a few years ago we were touring through an old Spanish city. The guide stopped in front of a large church and told us it was "unique". This one, he said, is dedicated to Jesus. All the others in the city are dedicated to Mary. Think about that for a moment. Those other churches had large icons of Mary as "Queen of heaven" in all her radiance and glory...the mother goddess is alive and well.

Bookmakers Paddy Power have drawn up a list of contenders to replace Benedict. According to them the favourite is Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana (9/4), with Cardinal Marc Ouellet next at 5/2 and Francis Arinze at 7/2. Here is their full list:

**Let me state (with some level of caution) that, in accordance with the Rules of Posting, the board does not officially accept any prophetic revelation outside of the Word of God. Let's exercise caution going down this road.**

Hmmm..., and I thought today was just going to be another boring, gray, cold day in Illinois.

You just had to go there didn't ya Andy.

How to talk about this..., without talking about this? That is the question.

Just having some fun with ya. Totally get where you are coming from brother and agree with you that we need to keep this from going down a path that is not honoring to our Father or this board we all love, and still be allowed to talk this over.

                            EXACTLY!

It's interesting but we can't accept it as anything other than that. False prophets do occasionally get things right but we're still not to pay any attention to them beyond, IMO, a casual interest - and then with extreme caution. As always we need to keep in mind the world is watching and with that everything from unbelievers to baby Christians to mature....we just need to be mindful.
