  • More Evidence of Silly "Thinking"

    AP:

Traditionally .. whatever that means anymore .. Thanksgiving was a time to forget everything else and families spend time together. But now, how can a family do that when there are so many super deals out there? Black Friday? Ha! Let's back that up to Thanksgiving day! We need that edge over our competitors. We HAVE to get more of the total expenditure! We MUST!

Of course, none of that would amount to anything, if the people didn't go. If the stayed on tradition. But all that is far gone now for most. If that blue glowing BluRay player is marked down so much on Black Friday, but even $4 MORE on Thanksgiving .. who could resist? Why hang out with family when you could save $4?

Oh well ... just my little rant triggered by the article at the above link. As you were.

Issachar, loves a good hike in the woods with his children and some of the grandchildren on Thanksgiving .. especially if there is snow. Then into the warm smell of amazing food and my daughter's most amazing (I'm serious) apple pies.

Go with me on a trip down memory lane here.
Back to the '70's and a Mac Davis special on teevee, where Christmas Day has become commerce day.

I'm thinking we are livin' it.

It was in the 1970's when stores started to be open on Sunday. There were some before that .. but not many. Now it's "normal" (the new normal? .. for lot's of things?) and it is getting more "normal" to be open on holidays.

Thanksgiving isn't a problem at all, but - since Tasarwen and I don't have family around at Christmas, it's always a real challenge to find a restaurant that is open on Christmas Day. Occasionally, I can find a "brunch" (generally for an outrageous price), but sometimes that's hard. In our town-before-this-one, we had a nice little Chinese place that became a Christmas Day tradition for lunch - no such luck where we live now.

The one option that is always there, and quite frankly, which we have never had to resort to, would be the cafeteria at the local hospital. Always cookin'.

what I object to is that from Thanksgiving until Christmas all I hear on the radio is "Grandmar got run over by a reindeer" and that "Bark bark bark" to "Jingle bells"......

of course Wallyworld allready has their Christmas stuff up..... getting so a person going into one of those stores gets trampled and the stores loudspeaker blesses you with their collage of Christmass music on their endless tape so you hear that song in your dreams for that week....

As long as the goose isn't "smiling" at you.
Karen and I went through this too, so we started our own tradition.
We cook a ribroast, and a few veggies. No other family, just us.

Just 15 minutes ago Tasarwen and I were talking about maybe going to Seattle for Christmas - sure to be plenty pf places open on Christmas Day there. (Snide-ness not intended.)

Gregstien, it too me a while, but I've finally got that "tradition" firmly in place of Tasarwen not slaving away over a big meal - for two - for 20 minutes - with all those dishes. Perkins does a very nice job of Thanksgiving, for instance.

I don't think there is anything wrong with someone wanting to go out the day after and take advantage of sales for stuff they'd be buying anyway .. it's just the push, the drive ... gotta get, gotta get .. fast! that some have. And then the stores, like the original article says, just have to get more, more, more ... make employees work on Thanksgiving day. Sad.

Re: More Evidence of Silly "Thinking"

                        ...
Joe Feldman, an analyst at Telsey Advisory Group, said the earlier opening opening should help retailers grab market share.

"It certainly extends the holiday season a little bit longer and it is really about getting that sale before your competitor does," he said. "It may not mean incrementally more sales but it could definitely capture more for retailers that are open."

Not all employees are thrilled about having to come to work on the holiday.

Casey St. Clair, a Target employee in California, has started an online petition asking the retail giant to save Thanksgiving from Black Friday creep.

She told CNBC's "Closing Bell" on Monday "In the almost six years since I've been there, I've seen the opening creep back every year."

St. Clair said on Thanksgiving, "retail is not a necessary service that needs to be open."

In a statement, Target said its "opening time was carefully evaluated with the expectations of our guests and the needs of our business and team in mind."

While opening on Thanksgiving may be giving the customer what he or she wants, retail analyst Stacey Widlitz warned that deals will be staggered throughout the day and some shoppers may come away disappointed.

Nonetheless, "Black Friday sales are 10 percent of holiday sales," Widlitz noted. "So, if you're the first out there, you'll gain market share."
                        source

It would be wonderful if people (shoppers) just stayed away and Thanksgiving Day sales were less than a dollar.

It's too bad there isn't a way to get people to be onboard with this .. just say no.

I agree with this too! Now my girls like to go out on that Friday but they tell me the thrill is gone. I hope so. Now they like to just go and meet the other fellow relatives that go out for lunch at Olive Garden and then home again, to decorate. My favorite thing to do after Thanksgiving. Until then my fall harvest decorations stay up for the family day on Thanksgiving. I must say I sometimes am sorry that I chose a job that is obliged to work holidays. But babies insist on being born according to their schedule So this year at the hospital. Oh well I get to take good leftovers as I work 3-11 shift. Love those leftovers.

Plumbob, last year my dh and I spent Christmas day in Hawaii. We left all behind and enjoyed a lovely little turkey roll with all the stuffings and trimmings from Costco. Cheap, just the right size. Add a few brussels sprouts, a sweet yam and and some garlic mashed potatoes and you dont have to go anywhere for christmas. Delicious!
