Re: Crisis-ridden EU wins Nobel Peace Prize (AP)
Hi Janet
Crisis-hit Europeans see cruel joke in EU Nobel
"Is this a joke?" said Chrisoula Panagiotidi, 36, an Athens beautician, laughing derisively upon hearing that the European Union had won the Nobel Peace Prize.

EU's Schulz welcomes Nobel prize but warns peace 'under threat'
"Those who want to strengthen the European Union... they received emphatic backing from the Nobel Prize committee today with this result," he added, when asked what the prize worth 8.0 million Swedish kronor ($1.2 million, 930,940 euros) prize meant."It's not a collection of 27 countries that received the Nobel Prize today but the union these countries created," he said.
"The European Union was very much strengthened today."
"It's an emotional day," he also said, admitting he was "surprised" by the Nobel Prize win.

Although there is a lot of fuss and prestige associated with this award...it is only awarded by a committee of 5 people chosen by the Norwegian government. Who knows who these five people ...I have never taken time to look.

Remember this thread when Obama won....

Who Nominated Obama For the Nobel Peace Prize?
The nomination deadline for the Nobel Peace Prize was February 1. What had Barack Obama accomplished by that date? Who nominated him? Himself?
The deadline for nominations is February 1, meaning Obama would've been nominated after being in office for just 11 days.
Geir Lundestad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, told "Good Morning America" the decision was unanimous.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nobel_Peace_Prize
According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."[1]
Alfred Nobel's will stated that the prize should be awarded by a committee of five people elected by the Norwegian ParliamentIn 2009, a record 205 nominations were received.[8] The Committee keeps the nominations secret and asks that nominators do the same. Over time many individuals have become known as "Nobel Peace Prize Nominees", but this designation has no official standing.[9] Nominations from 1901 to 1955, however, have been released in a database.[10] When the past nominations were released it was discovered that Adolf Hitler was nominated in 1939 by Erik Brandt, a member of the Swedish Parliament. Brandt retracted the nomination after a few days.[11] Other infamous nominees included Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini. However, since nomination requires only support from one qualified person, all nominations do not necessarily represent the opinion of the Nobel committee itself.[citation needed]
Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which recognize completed scientific or literary accomplishment, the Nobel Peace Prize may be awarded to persons or organizations that are in the process of resolving a conflict or creating peace.Nominations must usually be submitted to the Committee by February 1 of the year in question. Nominations by committee members can be submitted up to the date of the first Committee meeting after this deadline.[7]Last edited by cnav; 10-12-2012, 10:00 AM.

jmvho?
The Noble Peace Prize has more prestige in the eyes of the elite then in reality among the people of the world.
But like the Obama award it is being used as a message board of their beliefs and dreams for the future then anything to do with past performance.

The Oslo accords (1993) between Israel/PA that Abbas keeps threatening to scrap also was birthed in secrecy in Oslo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oslo_I_Accord
Negotiations concerning the agreement, an outgrowth of the Madrid Conference of 1991, were conducted secretly in Oslo, Norway, hosted by the Fafo institute, and completed on 20 August 1993; the Accords were subsequently officially signed at a public ceremony in Washington, D.C., on 13 September 1993[2] in the presence of PLO chairman Yasser Arafat, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and U.S. President Bill Clinton. The documents themselves were signed by Mahmoud Abbas for the PLO, foreign Minister Shimon Peres for Israel, U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher for the United States and foreign minister Andrei Kozyrev for Russia.
