    Re: Volcanoes

Dutch hasn't posted anymore on this but I wonder if this additional rash of earthquakes is related to volcanic activity?

Earthquake Swarm Reported at Chile’s Tatara-San Pedro

possibly numbering in the hundreds of small earthquakes over the last few days. The reports are a little scant and the information coming from different parts of the Chilean government are contradictory: the regional governor of the area was quoted as saying that “it is of volcanic earthquakes, so we are on alert”

Signs of Revived Activity at El Hierro in the Canary Islands

Over the last few days, seismicity under the island has resumed and its manifestation is very similar to what we saw last summer during the lead up to the eruption of El Hierro in October 2011. Over 50 earthquakes have been recorded at El Hierro, some as large as ~M3.5 and AVCAN thinks that the new seismicity suggests that magma is moving in the same conduits as the fall 2011 activity.

El Hierro Volcano : Green and Yellow alert – Pevolca calls a Yellow alert in the unpopulated earthquake zone

Last update: June 27, 2012 at 1:59 pm by By Armand Vervaeck

                          Update 27/06 – 13:03 UTC
                          - 104 earthquakes so far today
                          - the last several hours HT has nearly stopped and the frequency of earthquakes is also slightly downward
                          Important Update 27/06 – 12:32 UTC
Pevolca calls a Yellow alert in the unpopulated earthquake zone. In a live interview on RTVC, the local Canary Island TV and Radio station, María josé jurado has declared that the El Julan and La Dehesa area will be labeled as “Yellow Alert” area. Besides a church and a lighthouse, this area is unpopulated.
The move sounds logic to ER as the direct treat to other areas for eventual earthquake damage is very limited. Earthquakes are the main risk at this moment.

Ground deformation detected by the movement of magma in El Hierro

The Institute Volcano Islands (Involcan) today reported that during the last two days have been recorded on the island of El Hierro horizontal displacements of the ground an inch to the east, and three inches to the north and as an elevation of two centimeters. This clearly reflected as Involcan, a process of movement of magma underground.

                                Volcanic activity lifts Canary island
Following days of almost continual earthquakes, residents of the small Canary island of El Hierro are once again living in fear of a volcanic eruption as their island begins to lift.
