Anak Krakatau (Child Of Krakatoa) Erupts

Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday sending columns of ash and rock hurtling high into the air.

The rise in volcanic and earthquake activity prompted authorities to put in place a 2km exclusion zone for tourists and local fishermen.

The Indonesian Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Centre reported that an estimated 6,000-7,000 volcanic earthquakes were recorded daily during the weekend and on Monday. Daily earthquake totals usually do not exceed 100-200.

Photo: Mysterious African Volcano Still Erupting

Satellite images suggest that a restive east African volcano is continuing to simmer — after erupting in more spectacular fashion earlier this summer — in an isolated region where eyewitness accounts are few and far between.

The Nabro Volcano, which lies near the border of Ethiopia and Eritrea, has been erupting since the middle of June. The new images indicate lava is flowing from the 7,280-foot (2,218-meter) peak, which is the tallest of several volcanoes in the region.

After watching Sakurajima Volcano erupt daily for months on end, today I noticed a NEW spot erupting smoke/steam on the back side of the mountain... this has now progressed into a full blown large venting --- possibly the formation of a new caldera, or a second smaller cone.

Taken from Boston's update site, today's events so far. It reports a series of earthquakes in the Canary Islands, including a 4.6 but no reoirts of EQ's by the USGS or on their site.

                                http://www.canariesnews.com/2011/09/...quakes-update/

11/11/2011 @ 14:23 – The director of the National Geographic Institute has said that they are expecting a possible double eruption to the north of El Hierro both underwater and on land, according to the latest data available to them.

11/11/2011 @ 13:58 – Scientists advise that the probability of a new eruption to the north of El Hierro has increased. A new underwater eruption is predicted to the north of El Hierro, in an area known as ‘El Golfo’

11/11/2011 @ 12:40 – Two webcams are to go live today on the island of El Hierro. One will point at the eruption area in the Mar de Las Calmas sea and another one will point in the general direction of the harbour of La Restinga. Two more webcams are due to be installed in the north, off the coast of Frontera where there is increased activity underwater and a new eruption is predicted. This comes after an agreement between the El Hierro council and Telefonica.

11/11/2011 @ 09:40 – There has been an earthquake between the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria measuring 1.6 Richter at 04:44 this morning.

11/11/2011 @ 09:01 – Scientists prepare for a new eruption, possibly to the north of El Hierro. After a period of calm came a 4.6 degree earthquake this morning, at 00:20 located to the north-west of El Hierro. This is the strongest quake to hit the island so far. Scientists are expecting a new eruption to take place and claim that data points towards a new eruption off the coast of Frontera, to the north-west of the island as this is where all the lastest earthquakes are being detected. So far today there have been 23 earthquakes over 1.5 degrees on the island, three of these have been felt by the islands population. The emergency services (112) received 29 calls from different areas of El Hierro, Tenerife and La Palma when the 4.6 quake struck.

11/11/2011 @ 07:28 – After a quieter few days on El Hierro, the strongest earthquake yet has hit the island at 00:20 this morning, a magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale. It was said to be felt in Tenerife.
