  • Beach still closed due to mystery illness

Samples show normal levels of E. coli bacteria in water where 30 swimmers came down sick

Public health officials are on the case after about 30 people became sick after swimming at Birch Cove Beach at Dartmouth’s Lake Banook.

"We’re at 30 right now," said Michaelyn Thompson, a spokeswoman for Halifax Regional Municipality, which supervises the beach.

The municipality closed down the beach Tuesday after lifeguards and others who swam there began reporting flu–like symptoms, such as vomiting and diarrhea.

"This is very uncommon. This has never happened before. They may have gotten an incident here or there (in the past) where people weren’t feeling well after swimming," said Thompson.

It is suspected the illnesses are linked to the water, but the cause hasn’t yet been pinpointed.

Late Wednesday afternoon, E. coli had been ruled out as a cause.
