  • Cornyn: Obama Bypassing Congress on Debt Limit is 'Crazy Talk'

Sen. John Cornyn warned President Obama on Sunday to not even consider interpreting the Constitution's Fourteenth Amendment to bypass Congress and raise the debt limit without its approval.

"That's crazy talk. It's not acceptable for Congress and the president not to do their job and to say somehow the president has the authority then to basically do this by himself," Cornyn, R-Texas, a former judge on the Texas Supreme Court, told "Fox News Sunday."

The proposal that Obama re-interpret Section 4 of the Fourteenth Amendment to justify raising the $14.3 trillion debt limit has been gaining traction in Democratic circles since Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner told reporters that the Constitution's language could support the president's raising the limit without congressional approval.

    Fourteenth Amendment; Sec. 4:

Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

I don't see it. Maybe Mr. Obama could take up Mr. Bush's concept and get it over with ...

Of course, Mr. Bush (find this comment in context) was meaning he was a bit overwhelmed with all the process of the U.S. Government. Mr. Obama on the other hand, imho, is being serious ..

Could President Obama pursue a ‘nuclear option’ on the debt ceiling?

Citing the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, some scholars are arguing that President Obama does not need authorization in order to borrow more to pay the debt obligations of the United States.

The United States Constitution has two separate provisions dealing with debt. The first is Article I, Section 8 which states,

      “The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defense and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

To borrow money on the credit of the United States;”

The second provision comes from the 14th Amendment which states,

“The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.”

Under the “nuclear option,” President Obama would cite the 14th Amendment in directing the Treasury Department to borrow more money in order to ensure the “validity of the public debt of the United States.” Those public debts include, but are not limited to, interest payments on the already-held debt, Social Security payments, Medicare payments, and payments to defense contractors.

        Fourteenth Amendment; Sec. 5:

The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
I wonder how that plays into Mr. Obama's machinations? "... Congress shall have power .."

I believe that no matter what route is taken to bring it about, the debt ceiling will be raised. Next time it is due, it will be raised then, too. The only way to turn things around, barring God's direct intervention, is to do things that most of the public will not tolerate. Look what has happened in Wisconsin and other areas when just a smidgeon of what needs to be done was simply proposed.

Try as they may, humans cannot rule themselves. Force can prolong the appearance of them ruling themselves, but the day of reckoning will always come. Selfishness is an intrinsic part of the sin nature and the fruit of selfishness is inevitable; in a word, ungodliness.

This is why, as believers, it is so important to be in fellowship .. well, part of the reason. We should be just because we have the Son ..

        1 John 5:
        11
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

White House reportedly offers cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, in deficit talks

Amid ongoing efforts to work out a deal to raise the debt ceiling, the New York Times reports that the White House is offering up tens of billions of dollars' worth of reductions in Medicaid and Medicare programs - if Republicans agree to increase tax revenues.
