  • New Mexico wildfires force evacuation at Los Alamos nuclear labratory

Raging wildfires in New Mexico forced the evacuation of the famed nuclear lab at Los Alamos Monday, though officials insist that radioactive material is secure.

Fires have burned as close as one mile from the government lab - threatening buildings, power lines and gas lines, officials said.

"Lab emergency crews have been dispatched across the lab to protect key facilities and materials," said lab spokesman Jeff Berger.

"Protected areas include all hazardous and radioactive facilities and our proton accelerator and super-computing centers."

Fire crews have been battling wildfires all across the Southwest and Texas, with 41 large-scale blazes torching more than 1.4 million acres.

Wildfire threatens Los Alamos National Lab

he Los Alamos National Laboratory will be closed Monday as fire crews battle a wildfire raging nearby, a statement on the facility's website said.

"All laboratory facilities will be closed for all activities and nonessential employees are directed to remain off site," the statement said. "Employees are considered nonessential and should not report to work unless specifically directed by their line managers."

The Los Conchas fire, which flared up Sunday afternoon, was reported to be less than a mile from the lab's southwestern boundaries late Sunday, another statement from the facility said.

Special crews have been dispatched to Water Canyon near the lab to protect the facility, according to the statement.

"All radioactive and hazardous material is appropriately accounted for and protected," the lab said.

UPDATE 2-Wildfire reaches US Los Alamos nuclear facility

It was set up in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project to create the first atomic bomb and still maintains the nation's largest nuclear weapons arsenal.

Explosive materials on the laboratory's grounds are stored safely in underground bunkers made of concrete and steel, as well as earthen berms, Roark said.

Re: New Mexico wildfires force evacuation at Los Alamos nuclear labratory

It seems kind of ironic that wildfires are jeopardizing one nuclear plant in New Mexico, and also at the same time flood waters are jeopardizing another nuclear power plant in Nebraska. Only Colorado is between them, and they are almost in the center of the country.

I wonder if these potentially serious disasters have anything to do with this nation's continued stand to force Israel to divide her land and give her capital to the Palestinians???

Is it coincidental that should there be a nuclear accident of some kind it could divide this country?

            Umm... I don't think so.

I understand they are not saying why the 100 people were told to evacuate.

But doesn’t your brain stop for a moment when you read back to back:

“all is well – please run”

Some 13,000 people, most of the city's residents, have been moved from Los Alamos. Those who refused to leave will be monitored by police and National Guard, officials said.

But the anti-nuclear watchdog group Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety said the fire appeared to be about 3.5 miles from a dumpsite where as many as 30,000 55-gallon drums of plutonium-contaminated waste were stored in fabric tents above ground. The group said the drums were awaiting transport to a dump site in southern New Mexico.

Lab officials at first declined to confirm that such drums were on the property, but in a statement early Tuesday, lab spokeswoman Lisa Rosendorf said such drums are stored in a section of the complex known as Area G. She said the drums contain cleanup from Cold War-era waste that the lab sends away in weekly shipments to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.

She said the drums were on a paved area with few trees nearby and would be safe even if a fire reached the storage area. Officials have said it is miles from the flames.

Re: New Mexico wildfires force evacuation at Los Alamos nuclear labratory

Los Alamos is where the first atomic bomb was built and where today's most dangerous weapons are made.

Officials say the nuclear material inside Los Alamos is secure, and that there is no danger to the public. But one former top security official, Glen Walp, isn't so sure.

"Potential is high for a major calamity if the fire would reach these areas," he said.

He said that nuclear waste is stored 3 miles from where the fire is blazing now.

"It contains approximately 20,000 barrels of nuclear waste," Walp said. "It's not contained within a concrete, brick and mortar-type building, but rather in a sort of fabric-type building that a fire could easily consume."

Lab spokesman Steve Sandoval could not say what would happen if drums containing that waste were to burn.

and then there is this verse, makes me wonder

Zec 14:12 ¶ And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

State and federal officials are monitoring air quality around Los Alamos as a wildfire continues to march through the mountains surrounding the northern New Mexico community.

The Las Conchas fire has charred more than 60,000 acres since starting in the Jemez Mountains on Sunday afternoon. The fire has forced evacuations as well as the closure of Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Lab personnel are monitoring the air for radionuclides and particulate matter. The lab also has monitors that can be used to check for possible radiation contamination from the fire.

Fire chief says Los Alamos lab is safe from wildfire

But Tucker said that the waste, which is stored in drums, are kept on a blacktop with no vegetation around and are safe from fire. In case the fire was to close in, firefighters were ready to use foam to ensure that nothing would be released into the environment, he said.
