NASA: Asteroid Will Pass ‘Very Close’ To Earth On Sunday
    September 4, 2014 2:05 PM

It will be about 25,000 miles away at the time of its closest approach to Earth. It won’t be observable to the unaided eye, but amateur astronomers with small telescopes might be able to spot the fast-moving appearance of the asteroid.

‘Extreme’ X-1 class solar storm to hit Earth
      SEPTEMBER 11, 2014 10:31AM

It’s been several years since Earth has had a solar storm of this size coming from sunspots smack in the middle of the sun, said Tom Berger, director of the Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado.

Huge Solar Flare Erupts from Biggest Sunspot in 24 Years (Photos)

The sunspot is the largest of its kind since November 1990, and is larger than a monster sunspot that spawned a series of major solar flares over Halloween in 2003, Young wrote.

Earth has its own Star-Trek-like invisible shield

Scientists studying Earth’s Van Allen belts have found an invisible shield that blocks ultrafast electrons from moving deeper into Earth’s atmosphere.

In the 1950s, James Van Allen made one of the first major discoveries of the space age when he and his team found Earth’s two Van Allen radiation belts. These doughnut-shaped rings high above Earth are filled with high-energy electrons and protons. They swell and shrink in response to incoming energy disturbances from the sun, as they protect Earth from space radiation and the effects of our sun’s activity.

The newly found boundary layer is roughly 7,200 miles (11,600 km) above Earth’s surface. The Van Allen belts themselves extend up to 25,000 miles (40,000 km) high.

And to think that all of this happened randomly!

Days of darkness this December? Of course not.

Heard the rumor that “NASA says” Earth will experience several days of total darkness in December 2014? Not true, of course.

This rumor has spread like wildfire, as did the same rumor in 2011, which called for days of darkness caused by the erstwhile Comet Elenin. 2014’s version of the rumor apparently first began with this article from Hutzlers.com.

Planetary alignment January 4 will make us weigh less? Of course not

The idea we will all weigh less and even experience a floating sensation due to a planetary alignment on January 4, 2015 (#zeroday) is entirely false.

Gosh, just when the rumor of 3-6 days of total darkness in December is beginning to die down, another crazy rumor has begun – ahem – floating around the webosphere. Will there be a planetary alignment on January 4, 2015, which will cause a “decrease of gravity,” causing us all to weigh slightly less and even “float?” Of course not. Come on, guys. Get a grip.

reminds me of letters sent to nasa by children in the 1960's...
one read "I can go (into space)after school, but have to be home before dark" another said he could go into space during summer vacation... My favorite was a girl writing Nasa saying that she would be a good choise because "I've been weightless several times"

Yes, imho Teen girls do that quite often

In 2015, first of six supermoons comes on January 20

Spring tides accompany January 2015’s supermoon. Will the tides be larger than usual at the January, February and March new moons? Yes, all new moons (and full moons) combine with the sun to create larger-than-usual tides, but perigee new moons (or perigee full moons) elevate the tides even more.

This is not an end-time sign but it is very interesting and shows the infinite universe (are there more?) that we may be able to explore, in heaven, if we want to and the Lord allows it?

So, John, you trying to make me feel small ???

I also remember that someone said that the number of stars was about the same as the number of grains of sand on all the beaches of the earth...

                                YES !!! 10 sextillion stars...a sextillion is 10 to the 21st power--(21 zeros) in America/// 36 zeros in Europe

So, there’s your answer, Sheldon. For some “back of the napkin” math we can guess that there are more stars in our Universe than there are grains of sand on all the beaches of Earth.

Oh, one more thing. Instead of grains of sand, what about atoms? How big is 10 sextillion atoms? How huge would something with that massive quantity of anything be? Pretty gigantic. Well, relatively at least. 10 sextillion of anything does sound like a whole lot.
If you were to make a pile of that many atoms… guess how big it would be. It’d be about…. (gesture big then gesture small) 4 times smaller than a dust mite. Which means, a single grain of sand has more atoms than there are stars in the Universe.
