'Controlled' power cuts likely as Sun storm threatens national grid

Officials in Britain and the United States are preparing to make controlled power cuts to their national electricity supplies in response to a warning of a possible powerful solar storm hitting the Earth. In an interview with The Independent, Thomas Bogdan, director of the US Space Weather Prediction Centre, said that controlled power "outages" will protect the National Electricity Grids against damage which could take months or even years to repair should a large solar storm collide with the Earth without any precautions being taken.

The greatest fear is a massive storm as big as the one documented by astronomer Richard Carrington in 1859, which burnt out telegraph wires.

"The sort of storms capable of doing that are fairly rare events. We refer to them as 'black swans'," Dr Bogdan said. "If the Carrington event occurred today, and power grid operators did not take efforts to safeguard their infrastructure, then we could be facing a scenario like that."

Solar Flare This Week Illuminated Power Grid's Vulnerability

The solar wind burst is expected to deliver only a 'glancing blow' to Earth's magnetic field, but such currents can trip key transmission lines and damage transformers irreversibly

"If the solar storm of 1921, which has been termed a one-in-100-year event, were to occur today, well over 300 extra-high-voltage transformers could be damaged or destroyed, thereby interrupting power to 130 million people for a period of years," Joseph McClelland, director of the Office of Electric Reliability at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, said at a May 31 House Energy subcommittee hearing on the issue.

"The U.S. society and economy are so critically dependent upon the availability of electricity that a significant collapse of the grid precipitated by a major natural or man-made EMP [electro-magnetic pulse] event could result in catastrophic civilian casualties," Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) said at the same hearing.

The U.S. grid currently relies for its defense on warnings from NASA that would alert U.S. utilities to take actions to protect their systems. Tuesday's storm did not require a response, NERC said.

While the House last year passed the "GRID Act," addressing vulnerabilities of the bulk power sector to natural threats and cyber attacks, action in the Senate is tied up by conflicting bids for jurisdiction by five different committees.

This is a nearly 1-hr video and I don't really know all the content but please note that WeDG, as a Ministry (MWM), rejects any prophetic sources other than the Christian Bible.

        (Just had to interject that)

Re: Mayan calendar 2012 and Carrington effect

I listened to it. The interviewee says years ago he went and spoke to the mayan elders and the mayan calander is more like a farmers almanac, observations based on cycles of events that were handed down to them by a previous culture. He also said the date Dec. 21, 2012 was more like a date for a end of a cycle. That we have till that date to change our ways (as to what's being done to the planet) and if not then at that time the planet will start to heal itself, not all at once but leading to extinction. The elders mentioned the sun and solar storms, that could result in the carrington effect happening.

When I read the articles above that I posted I thought of Lewis and this thread so that's why I posted them in here.
