  • Israel holds Russia talks in push to thwart Palestinians state recognition

The visit comes just two weeks before the foreign ministers of the Quartet − the United States, Russia, the European Union and the UN − are to meet. France, Germany and the United Kingdom are pushing for announcing a new international peace initiative. The principles of the initiative known so far include setting up two states on the basis of the 1967 borders with territorial swaps; a fair, realistic and agreed-upon solution to the predicament of the Palestinian refugees; Jerusalem as a capital for both states and security arrangements that would protect Israel but not infringe on Palestinian sovereignty
The U.S. administration has yet to comment on the initiative, but it has already won the support of the UN and, it would seem, Russia.

They are desperately trying to convince the Quartet not to go through with it. The part I don't get is where is it different from the Roadmap? It isn't, so what is going on???? The only thing I can see is that the Roadmap was based on negotations first. But no one except the Israelis believe that can continue. They have a deadline they have to keep.
but it has already won the support of the UN
And we have seen what this can mean in Libya. R2P

I'm sure the above article will sound like a good reason to them for R2P.

Those peacekeepers sound like they could be very close.

    Who's afraid of Barack Obama?
Netanyahu wants to show Barack Obama that Congress is behind him, and to deter the president from imposing an arrangement that would eject Israel from the West Bank and the settlers from their homes.

The problem is, Bibi won't be making his speech until late in May and the Quartet meeting is April 15th.

      From the above article...
A month after the premier visits Washington, there is a chance that Obama will come to Jerusalem to participate in the "Tomorrow" conference, held under the auspices of President Shimon Peres. If so, Obama, too, will speak, whether at that event or in the Knesset, but his remarks about the diplomatic process will be addressed to Netanyahu. This "Jerusalem speech" will make it clear just how far Obama intends to go to establish a Palestinian state, to end Israel's occupation in the territories and to eliminate the settlements, which he has called illegitimate.

        And even more important...
Plus there was a recent piece in The Economist saying that Obama had asked British Prime Minister David Cameron and other leaders to evince toughness toward Israel (the White House has denied this ). And also, Obama's remarks before American Jewish leaders about two weeks ago, to the effect that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is serious and Netanyahu is not, were quoted this week in The Washington Post.

          Definition of EVINCE
          transitive verb
1: to constitute outward evidence of
2: to display clearly : reveal
          — evincĀ·ible \-ˈvin(t)-sə-bəl\ adjective

And we know from recent articles they have been working hard to accomplish this request.
