WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Israeli President Shimon Peres on a visit to Washington reportedly will present the outlines of a peace plan that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expects to unveil in May.

Peres will be in Washington next week, the Israeli Embassy said in a release Thursday, and arrangements for meetings with "government leaders" are under way.

Israeli media have reported that Peres will meet with President Obama and present the outlines of the peace plan that Netanyahu expects to introduce in an address at the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee policy forum. The White House had no comment.

Israel envoys: recognise interim Palestinian state
Some Israeli diplomats are urging their government to acknowledge a Palestinian state within provisional borders rather than wait for the Palestinians to seek UN recognition of their sovereignty.
Those pushing for Israel to take the initiative believe it would take the wind out of the Palestinian campaign, leaving the question of permanent frontiers to be hammered out in talks between the sides.

The idea has been brought up before. But the Quartet members and the Palestinians rejected it.
