New Growing Storm A Concern For National Hurricane Center

Miami, Florida (AHN) - The National Hurricane Center in Miami is showing concern for an area of strong convection over the western Atlantic Ocean Sunday morning, as the cluster of storms are becoming better organized.

The cluster is nearly in the same location where Hurricane Katrina started her flare up nearly two weeks ago, just west of the Bahamas.

Computer models suggest that slow tropical cyclone development is possible with the upper high building over the region, though they do not agree on exactly where it will occur along the surface.

A possible re-con mission might be scheduled for Monday to investigate.

I just watched it on the Weather Channel. It looks very close to Florida. Can hurricanes form when they are already that close to land?

Yes, Katrina did. It formed just off of the coast, so quickly that most here did not know about it. (I did, but I'm a weather hound.)

I went through the EASY part of Katrina, cat. 1. Then it went into the Gulf and the rest is sad history.

This storm is not technically a tropical storm yet--but is stalled off the coast of the Bahamas. We need to keep the Fla folks in prayer--Katrina hit them first--albeit not so horrendously--and after last year, Fla doesn't need more to deal with!

The good news is that if it does hit Florida, it appears it will go north of
where Katrina hit and will not go into the gulf. I would hate to imagine
what would happen if another storm went anywhere near the Louisiana
or Mississippi coast.
