During the audience, the Israeli president gave Benedict a silver menorah with an inscription composed by Peres himself: "To His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, the Shepherd who seeks to lead us to the fields of blessings and the fields of peace."
The pontiff, for his part, gave Peres a bronze medal — a replica of the medal placed in 1657 inside the conernstone of the Bernini colonnade in St. Peter's Square.
