  • Sonic Boom's Source Still a Mystery

Sometimes you gotta really wonder about the world we live in.

PASCAGOULA -- The boom that rattled windows in Pascagoula and Moss Point, swamped police phone lines and brought entire neighborhoods of people out of their homes to see what was happening was almost as much a mystery Wednesday as it was Tuesday night when it happened.

I may have related that my uncle worked for the FAA in the 1970's and 1980's. He said he'd talk to an air traffic controller once in awhile that had an aircraft pass over, way up, doing about Mach 5. No communications and no response at all. Test aircraft, most likely.

And Lockheed was testing Mach 5 aircraft, they say as early as 1983. The SR-71, though unofficially was Mach 3+, was supposedly Mach 4 capable.

With 2 32,500lb J-58's on afterburner, probably not a problem.

One guy who taught computer classes was in the Air Force. He said one AF controller got a radio call from a guy and the guy asked for base security and the base commander to meet him when he landed. The controller couldn't see him. Not long afterwards, a U-2 dropped out of the sky. They secured the aircraft while the pilot spoke with the base commander. Then he got back in an took off and went into a climb and ... disappeared. Though it's always claimed you could track a U-2. The Russians hit one over Russia and one over Cuba. A few others were shot down, too, with Taiwan pilots spying on China.

I seem to remember about 10 years ago hearing something about test
aircraft travelling at something called "hyper speed". I have not heard
      anything else about it.

Remember the last "official" SR-71 flight from the west coast to the east coast, ~2600 miles? It took less than an hour. I was in our base weather station once when the operator got a call from an aircraft. He wanted weather above 80,000 ft. The weatherman asked what his exact altitude was. The response: "There's no one else up here with us".

Yep, I've read the true altitude was in excess of 100,000 ft. You need that high speed to fly in such thin air. Extreme high speed. Another print under one photo said 125,000 ft.

          TR-1's (U-2's) going 400mph+ could hit 90,000 feet with the 103-foot wings.

Ken, hyper speed seems really fast. LOL
Of course not as fast as ludicrous speed.
But then that will cause you to go plaid!

I heard a sonic boom yesterday. Scared Greta into the shakes. It was the shuttle making reentry to land at the Cape.

That was very recent too. Wow...I don't know what to make of it all. Especially since there was no earthquake activity. It is a mystery indeed. And such a large area heard those noises. Very strange.

I put the word boom in the search engine you have, and this thread came up.
