  • Students' take-home assignment: Census kits

Anyone tempted to ignore the 2010 Census will have a tough time doing it — especially if they have kids in school.

The government has launched Census in Schools, an all-out campaign targeting superintendents, principals, teachers, students and, indirectly, parents, as schools open across the nation this month and next. The message: The Census is coming and here's why everyone should care.

What happens if a census worker comes to your door and you don't answer it? You know, pretend no one is home.

I am trying to remember exactly which month April, May or June my son-in-law and daughter got a letter telling them they would be receiving the 2010 census and it "had" to be filled out and returned. It was around 13 pages. My SIL filled it out and sent it back in. A week later they got another letter stating that the census form was received. Yes there is a penalty for not filling it out and returning it.

        You know.....
It's been about a year ago, maybe less, but I had a girl show up at my door that acted suspicious.
She said she was doing something for college credit, and needed to sell some magazines. She said she would need to ask me some questions.
She asked if I worked and if my wife worked, and then said she got extra credit if she found those out. She had previously asked if I was in the house alone and I stupidly said no. But she started asking some odd questions before she gave me her "sales pitch" and I told her that I wasn't interested, and that I had actually grown bored of the conversation, so I just shut the door. I can't recall if she asked about kids, and if she asked about salaries. I know I wouldn't answer either, so I may have given bogus answers on that. She might have been my neighborhood Acorn operative and I never knew. Or she may have truly been a college student. Either way, now I have 2 little reasons for not opening the door. Of course the little lamb doesn't look so intimidating.
