CAIRO – Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said Sunday that Spain and Egypt would organize a summit of Arab heads of state and government in the fall with the objective of pushing the peace process in the Middle East.
Fernandez de la Vega announced the summit at the press conference she held after meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, as which Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos was also present.
The summit with the Arab nations suggested by Spain and accepted by Egypt will be held in the latter country, the deputy premier said, adding that the initiative was being undertaken within the context of Spain’s assumption of the rotating presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2010.
The participants at the summit will be designated by Mubarak, but it is intended that there should be a broad representation and that all the principal actor countries in the conflict on the Arab side should be present.
During Spain’s turn at the EU helm, a meeting will also be organized among the European countries and Egypt to lend support to a privileged relationship between the two parties, Fernandez de la Vega said.
The deputy prime minister also announced another meeting to take place during Spain’s 6-month presidency, that one being the second summit of the Union for the Mediterranean to be held in Barcelona, the seat of that entity’s secretariat.
