  • Obama Appointee Suggests Radical Plan for Newspaper Bailout

Good grief. After reading this pictures of state controlled television pass before my eyes.

Rosa Brooks, who has moved from the L.A. Times to the Pentagon, called for more "direct government support for public media" and government licensing of the news, which critics say would destroy the independent media.

"The day that the government gets involved in the news media you see the end of the democratic process, because an independent news media is absolutely essential to the success of a democracy," said L. Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center, a conservative watchdog group.

Bozell said licensing journalists would violate American traditions and was a form of "intellectual prostitution."

"Since when did our Founding Fathers envision that ... you could exercise your right to freedom of speech provided you had a license from the federal government? This is the kind of stuff you have revolutions about," he told FOXNews.com.
Where Brooks, in the article, mentions often about bailouts of some sort saving the newspaper business, she misses totally that if newspapers gave the public what they want, the public would buy and they'd stay in business by means of ..... gasp .... the free market system.

I knew that newpapers were failing financially, but I never put together bailouts and newspaper and of course, all the strings attached to bailouts.

    Interesting.

The article does quote a guy though stating that the he can't see this ever happening; i.e. licensing journalists, etc.

The simple fact of the matter is that more and more people get their news from the internet. Bailing them out will do nothing to increase their profit.

Same as bailing out a buggy whip company.

And does it matter if we have state controlled media? Frankly, at this point, I cannot tell the difference...

I was kinda thinking "Slide Rule company" but buggy whips might, like slide rules, make a comeback, ya know.
