BERLIN (AFP) — European leaders are to meet in Berlin on February 22 to prepare for a summit of the G20 group of advanced and developing nations in London on April 2, the German government said on Monday.
Berlin has invited the heads of state and government from France, Britain and Italy -- which together with Germany are members of the G20 -- as well as from Spain and the Netherlands, the government said in a statement.
Also invited is the head of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, Berlin said. The European Union is a member of the G20, which comprises 19 industrialised countries and emerging giants such as China and India.
The main focus of the G20 summit in the British capital in April will be reform of international finance rules and institutions in the wake of the worst economic crisis since the 1930s.
The countries in the G20, currently chaired by Britain, represent around 90 percent of global gross national product, 80 percent of world trade as well as two-thirds of the world's population.
The group's leaders last met in Washington in November.
