Italian leaders favor global food bank

ROME, June 4 (UPI) -- Italian leaders at the Rome summit have proposed a sort of "global food bank'" to tackle the world food crisis. ''We will ask the European Union to help set up an international mechanism to create strategic resources to cope with emergencies,'' said Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, ANSA, the Italian news agency reported Wednesday. Frattini also said Italy supported United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's planned task force on the crisis, calling for ''global governance'' of food needs.

World Bank President Praises Saudi Arabia’s Role in Supporting Development

WASHINGTON , May 2 – World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick today said he had listened and learned from Saudi Arabia ’s experience in meeting development challenges, in mobilizing South to South investments, and from its expertise in agricultural development. He commended the Kingdom for its economic reforms that have ranked the country as a top Doing Business Reformer in 2007.

“Saudi Arabia is the largest Arab shareholder in the World Bank Group. This visit is an opportunity to continue the dialogue on how we can advance the Arab World initiative that we launched last year to address the region’s social and economic priorities,” Mr. Zoellick said after his meeting with HH King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saoud. “It is also a chance to work together to support agricultural development that can become part of a New Deal for Global Food Policy,” he added.

Fight against hunger must become globalized, Pope asserts

Vatican City, Jun 3, 2008 / 11:02 am (CNA).- On Tuesday morning in Rome, 50 leaders from around the world gathered at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The heads of state listened as the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone read a message from the Pope, which stressed that the world is more than capable of providing enough food for all.

The solution, which the Pope said is also a challenging one, “is to 'globalize,' not just economic and commercial interests, but also the call for solidarity, while respecting and taking advantage of the contribution of all components of society."
