ORANJESTAD, Aruba - Hurricane Felix toppled trees and forced tourists to seek shelter in hotels on a cluster of Dutch Caribbean islands Sunday before heading to the open waters of the Caribbean Sea as a Category 4 storm capable of major damage.

It was forecast to strengthen more over the next 24 hours.

Felix's maximum winds increased to nearly 140 mph, with higher gusts, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center. It was moving toward the west-northwest at about 20 mph.

The storm was forecast to spin over open waters of the central Caribbean Sea for the rest of the day and was expected to slam into Central America midweek...

      Thanks Faith,

I heard one of the forecasters say that they hadn't expected it to strengthen as quickly as it did, and that it's now considered a totally unpredictable storm.

Hurricane Felix now a category 5
        http://www.weather.com/newscenter/tr...=wxcenter_news

Hurricane Felix began a rapid intensification cycle Sunday afternoon and reached category 5 status by 8pm Sunday evening (eastern time). Top winds increased to 165 mph with gusts possibly as high as 200 mph. A NOAA airplane investigating Hurricane Felix encountered extreme turbulence and graupel (soft hail) forcing the mission to be cut short.

In the coming days, Felix will bring large waves to the southern coasts of Jamaica and Grand Cayman Island.

ORANJESTAD, Aruba - Hurricane Felix strengthened into a dangerous Category 5 storm Sunday and churned its way into the open waters of the Caribbean Sea after toppling trees and flooding some homes on a cluster of Dutch islands.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Felix was packing maximum sustained winds of 165 mph as it plowed westward toward Central America, where it was expected to skirt Honduras' coastline Tuesday before slamming into Belize on Wednesday as a hurricane capable of massive destruction.

...At 8 p.m. EDT, the storm was centered about 390 miles SE of Jamaica and was moving WNW at about 18 mph, the hurricane center said.

Thousands flee Hurricane Felix in Central America

TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of people fled low-lying areas on Central America's Caribbean coast on Monday to escape the powerful winds and torrential rains of approaching Hurricane Felix.

The highly dangerous Category 4 storm, due to make landfall on Tuesday morning, charged toward Nicaragua and Honduras with top sustained winds of 135 mph (215 kph), provoking fears of a repeat of Hurricane Mitch, which killed some 10,000 people in Central America in 1998.

                  Re: Hurricane Felix

hey.... keep in your prayers a small body of believers in Honduras and some missionaries there named Jim and Julie Nelms. They are located on a little bitty island off the mainland called Guanaja.

                  from them:

                  Hi All,

We want to thank you for your prayers for us as we prepare for Hurricane Felix. According to what we are seeing the hurricane is going to hit us sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday. At this point it is a category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph. By the time it gets here it could be up to a category 4.

Today is a bit weird around here. The majority of the people are acting like nothing is coming. Though they know about it, they are drinking, playing the lottery and living one minute to the next with no preparation for any storm. Either they are completely in denial or they simply don't care.

While we appreciated your concern for our well-being and your thoughtfulness to consider an evacuation we want you to know that we are planning on staying here and riding it out with our friends. The people of this island do not have the option of leaving and since this is our home too, we feel led to stay put too. Please continue to pray. We are boarding up windows and creating a hurricane shelter in our basement. We know we will have Patrick and his family with us as well as some others possibly. Most importantly we will have the Lord with us and we look forward to seeing His glory in the midst of the storm.

Please pray for a sensitivity to the Holy Spirits leading as we minister to those around us. Pray for a supernatural peace and, of course, that God will hide us in the shelter of His wings.

The following is a song that has been going through my mind today...

Hurricane Felix Hits Nicaragua as Category 5 Storm
                    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,295583,00.html

                    Tuesday, September 04, 2007

LA CEIBA, Honduras — Hurricane Felix slammed into Nicaragua's Miskito Coast as a record-setting Category 5 storm Tuesday, whipping metal rooftops through the air like razors and forcing thousands to flee.

Only 2 weeks earlier, Hurricane Dean struck Mexico further up the Caribbean coast. Never before in recorded hurricane history have two Category 5 Atlantic hurricanes made landfall in the same year. Only 31 Category 5 storms have been seen in the Atlantic since record-keeping began in 1886, including 8 in the last 5 seasons.

"The major concern now shifts to the threat of torrential rains over the mountains of Central America. Isolated maximum totals of 25 inches are possible. Persons living in flood-prone areas should take all precautions to protect life and property," said senior hurricane specialist Richard Pasch at the Hurricane Center in Miami.

Twin Atlantic and Pacific hurricanes making landfall on the same day is unprecedented, according to National Hurricane Center records dating back to 1949. The closest comparison happened at 5 a.m. on Aug. 24, 1992, when Hurricane Andrew devastated southern Florida 23 hours after Hurricane Lester hit Baja California, Mexico.
