  • Chemical Contrails on Discovery Channel Thurs

Millions of people have seen them; jet aircraft vapor trails lingering in the sky. Are these just regular "contrails," the carbon and water vapor exhaust from commercial planes, or are they potentially toxic "chemical trails"?

Re: Chemical Contrails on Discovery Channel Thurs

I have seen these where I live. I have been watching this go on in the sky's above us since 1992. Off and on. These trails are in abundance a couple of days before a low front comes through. I don't know if it is to cause it to rain more or rain less. This goes on in the winter too and there is a smell that comes from these clouds especially when it snows or rains. There have been many days that I will get up around 7 to beautiful clear blue skys and within a couple of hours we can see the trails and within a couple more hours we have a white covering and can no longer see blue skys. When I mention this stuff to people they just roll their eyes and then they start to watch their skys and see the same thing. These are not normal contrails, no matter how much they try and convince us. It really surprises me that more don't notice what is going on over our heads. I read a report once online that was concerning a law that was passed that allowed this. Has anyone seen this particular article?

I've always been 100% skeptical of such things - I'm looking forward to watching this and am suprised Discovery would choose such a subject.

I remember going through this here several years ago, and I tend to agree with you. I suspect Discovery will poo-poo the conspiracy theory, leading many to cry COVER UP! In other words, it won't answer any questions.

Do you or have you ever seen planes or any other type of aircraft laying these down? Have you ever heard engines or motors? That's what I don't understand. I've seen photos of these but never the machine that dispenses them.

A good pair of binoculars would help.

The pictures I've seen were really low altitude. That's why I was wondering. Yeah I always see the commercial jets, LOL. It's funny when you see 3 or 4 going different directions all pulling a short contrail in a dusk sky.

Or living at high altitude in clear air, as I do here in Colorado Springs at about 6600'. I ALWAYS see the airplanes, and they are simply commercial planes. At my altitude, you can even see the colors of the planes. Every once in a while I get out the binoculars and can see the United, American, Delta, etc logos on the tails. Occasionally they are military but the vast majority are commercial.

There are skeptics everywhere of course, and the talk of 'government conspiracy' always comes up. This has given rise to the talk of "chemtrails", which as the numerous idiotic websites on this subject indicate are part of a government conspiracy to put chemicals in the air to protect us from biological weapons, to test health systems, maybe to create in invisible toxic barrier to protect us against aliens, or whatever.

                gimmeabreak.

                  Here we go again.

Condesation trails (contrails) are just that. The burning of liquid hydrocarbon fuels, as jet fuel, produces canbon dioxide and water, lots of water. The water codenses to produce the condensation trails. They are produced by every jet that flies. They are especially visible when conditions allow fast condensation and the angle of sunlight is below them thus reflecting the light, hence, dawn and dusk.

I do not know of chemtrails but contrails come with the territory and are an unavoidable bi-product of jet travel.

Actually yes, I have seen these planes and still do to this day. I don't know anything about conspiracy therories but i do know what my eyes see. I see the commercial planes too go over our area when we do have a clear day. I see alot of them going in all directions. I see a short contrail behind them too. Their contrails are right behind them and they disappear within a couple of minutes. I also see these planes that start at one horizon and go to the other horizon and there is a trail of white behind them the whole way. This trail does not disappear. It just stays in the sky and seems to spread out Sometimes I will see more than one plane and these clouds or whatever they shall be called, hang in the sky and within a couple of hours our sky is a cover of white. No blue to be seen. So if these are just contrails from commercial airlines someone please tell me where I can move to where no commercial planes go over my head because I sure would rather beable to enjoy some blue sky. There was a bill introduced into Congress back in March 2005 I think that was
to establish the Weather Modification Operations and Research Board. Don't know if anything became of it. I think there was something else along these lines introduced into the House of Representatives in June 2005. Not sure what the outcome of these bills were. Maybe that will be addressed on this special. I don't usually say much about this stuff anymore because I got tired of people rolling their eyes and treating me like I had a screw loose. I have given it to God and let Him take care of all these problems. It is beyond me or my control. I just really appreciate the days that i do have blue sky.

I just had a vision of a scene from "spaced invaders."
the part where one of the aliens flushed the toilet as they were leaving earth -

Contrails that disappear fast versus slow is 100% due to the wind speeds where the airplane is. The higher the altitude the higher the wind speeds (typically). It's not unusual to have 100 MPH winds at 35,000 feet...this will quickly disperse any contrail created. Light winds - long and lasting contrails.

Let's not make this more than it is, folks...

Actually Andy, that's not true. The length of time a contrail remains is a function of vapor pressure (the amount of saturation in the atmosphere), temperature, and wind speed. If the air is barely saturated, the iced water vapor will be absorbed by the atmosphere fairly quickly, and the contrails will be very short, or they may not form at all. If the air is very saturated, contrails may last for hours. Rather than give a long dissertation about why condensation trails (con-trails) are formed and why some remain while others dissipate, go to this site.
